OBITUARIES
John Brent Purdin
John Brent “Purdy” Purdin died Friday,
June 4. He was 49.
He was born in Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia, on
March 31, 1955.
Brent was a lifelong resident of Yellow Springs. He
attended Mills Lawn Elementary School and Yellow Springs High School,
graduating in 1973.
He was the owner of Purdin Builders and worked in the
construction industry for 30 years. He truly enjoyed his work and was
an excellent family provider and a true friend. Brent was involved in
the Boy Scouts, Little League and soccer for his children. His passions
were playing golf with the boys at Locust Hills and shooting pool.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Stewart
Purdin, on April 18, 2004, and his father-in-law, Fred Stromberg.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Kay, and children,
John Paul and Brenda Marie; his mother, Mary Flo Purdin; brother, Scott,
his wife, Jan, and their children, Justin, Scotty and Annie; sisters,
Patti Purdin, and her son, Patrick, Terri Schindwolf, her husband, Paul,
and their children, Chelsea and Monika; brother, Todd, his wife, April,
and their children, David, Megan and Jacob; mother-in-law, Marie Stromberg;
sister-in-law, Marie Gay, and children, Bryan and Emily; brothers-in-law,
Martin Stromberg, Paul Stromberg and John’s and Brenda’s Uncle
Alan Lee and his wife, Lorraine; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 9, at the
Yellow Springs United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Glen Forest
Cemetery.
Mills Lawn establishes fund for
Purdin family
The Mills Lawn School family has opened an account at US Bank to
help the Purdin family in their time of need, following the death of John
Brent Purdin on June 4. Brent’s wife, Nancy, has worked as a secretary
at Mills Lawn for many years.
Contributions may be made to the Purdin Family Fund
Donation Account. Donations will help defray funeral costs and living
expenses for the Purdins for the next few months.
In addition to his wife, Brent is survived by his two
children, John and Brenda.
Ralph A. Smith
Ralph Aaron Smith of Henderson, Nev., and formerly of Yellow Springs,
died Sunday, May 30, in Las Vegas. He was 68.
Born Aug. 10, 1935, in Springfield, he was the son
of Pete and Juanita Smith.
Mr. Smith was a corporate manager of Telecom, where
he retired in 1992. He received a bachelor’s degree in biology from
Central State University and a master’s degree in business. He was
a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, a member of the Dayton Duplicate
Bridge Club and a member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church in Springfield.
He is survived by his wife, V. Geraldine Smith; two
sons, Michael Smith of Park Hills, Ky., and Dr. Gregory Smith of Redondo,
Calif; a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Raymond Casey of Springfield;
one grandson, Gregory Smith Jr.; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins,
and other relatives.
Services will be held Saturday, June 12, at 1:30 p.m.,
in the Second Missionary Baptist Church in Springfield. Funeral arrangements
are being handled by the Robert C. Henry Funeral Home in Springfield.
Franklin Monnin
Franklin Monnin of Fairborn died Thursday, June 3. He was 69.
Born April 17, 1935, in Russia, Ohio, he was the son
of Albert and Eva (Didier) Monnin.
He retired from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as
a budget analyst and had a great love of the outdoors. He was a member
of the Knights of Columbus and Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church
in Fairborn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert
Monnin and sister-in-law Marie Monnin.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Barbara; children,
Lisa Ann and Joseph Corn of Waynesville, Gary E. Bayard and Rosemary Pierce
of Yellow Springs, Steven C. and Suzanne Bayard of Yellow Springs, Roger
E. and Chanda Bayard of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Alan L. Bayard of Beavercreek;
siblings, Marjorie and Paul Hoying of Lake Loramie and Eileen Monnin of
Dayton, Lloyd Monnin of Springfield and Anthony and Alice Monnin of New
Mexico; grandchildren, Devon, Dustin, Elisabeth, Joey and Bridget Corn,
Dillon and Nicole Bayard, Tanner Bayard, Kristen and Clinton Burmester
and Kevin Pierce; great-grandson Jackson Burmester and a great-granddaughter
who is expected soon, Rosemary Burmester.
A mass of Christian burial was held Monday, June 7,
at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Fairborn, with interment
following in Valley View Memory Gardens.
