Girls basketball wins two
The Lady Bulldogs basketball team acheived a convincing 50–32 victory
over Xenia Christian on Monday, Dec. 14, before edging out Jefferson 52–41
on Thursday, Dec. 17. The wins take the girls team to a winning record
of 3–2.
Against the Xenia Christian Ambassadors, the Lady Bulldogs got into the
game slowly, and found their range in the second quarter when they scored
15 points to the Ambassadors’ six to go ahead 22–8 at the
halftime. The Bulldogs were led by junior guard Alex Beer (eight points)
and freshman post player Angela Allen (five points). At a faster
pace in the third quarter, Yellow Springs outscored Xenia to extend the
lead to 38–20. Beer chipped in with two three-point shots, while
Roniqua Cobb came through with five points for the period. Beer led
the team in scoring with 14 points, followed by Amber Dudgeon’s
10 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Angela Allen had another outstanding
game with nine points, seven rebounds and six steals. Maryah Martin contributed
to the cause with an outstanding floor control performance, six points,
five assists, six rebounds and seven steals.
Against Jefferson, the Lady Bulldogs took the Broncos by surprise, outscoring
them in the first period 20–9 and holding the lead with a halftime
score of 26–18. The Broncos came back to score three straight buckets
to start the third quarter with the help of a couple of early turnovers.
But the Bulldogs regained their footing to go into the fourth quarter
ahead 38–31. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bulldogs put some distance
between themselves and the Broncos by applying good pressure defense and
timely scoring to pull away for the win. Martin led the way with
17 points, along with six rebounds, three assists and five steals. Dudgeon
finished with 13 points, including five for five from the free-throw line,
nine rebounds and three assists. Beer came through with 11 points, Cobb
had six points and four rebounds, and Allen finished with five points
and nine rebounds.
Swimmers
The YSHS girls swim team finished 11th out of 15 teams at the Kenton
Ridge meet held at Greenon High School on Saturday, Dec. 19. Springfield
Shawnee won the meet with 418 points, ahead of second place Springfield
Kenton Ridge and Urbana.
In individual races, sophomore Ericka Chick won the 200 freestyle in 2:00.11,
five seconds ahead of the next competitor. Yellow Springs finished one,
two in the 100-yard butterfly, with sophomore Elizabeth Malone winning
the event in 1:01.46, three seconds ahead of Chick. Malone also took second
in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:21.25.
For the relays, taking 14th place in the 200-yard medley relay were Mary
Triplett, Kelsey Cundiff, Malone and Chick. Malone, Mariah Nickols, Katie
Triplett and Chick finished eighth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Katie Triplett finished 36th out of over 80 swimmers in the 50-yard free,
while Nickols was 27th in the 100 backstroke. Katie Triplett and Cundiff
also swam the 100 free, and Mary Triplett took 24th in the 100 breaststroke.
Boys swimmer takes it all
YSHS freshman Taylor Ford was the lone swimmer for the boys
team at the Kenton Ridge meet on Saturday, Dec. 19. He finished fifth
in the 200-individual medley in 2:31.10 and took sixth in the 100-yard
breaststroke in 1:16.68. He won 14 points in the first event and 13 in
the second to garner the school’s total 27 points to finish 11th
out of 15 teams.
Boys basketball undefeated
The YSHS boys basketball team crushed two Metro Buckeye Conference
foes last week to go ahead 5–0 for the season. The Bulldogs beat
Troy Christian 70–51 on Tuesday, Dec. 15 and crushed Xenia Christian
73–35 on Friday, Dec. 18.
Against Troy, Ryan Newsome was the game high scorer, with 21 points, followed
by Will Ripley’s 17. Against Xenia, Kody McDonald and Ripley were
the high scorers, each with 14 points, including McDonald’s three
3-pointers.
McKinney boys win two
The McKinney School seventh grade boys basketball team defeated
Troy Christian 35–14 last week, led by Ahmad Wagner’s
17 points in two quarters of play. Liam Weigand and Jared Scarfpin chipped
in seven points each.
