Local resident Jim Rose and his small wooden friend Pepito came to the U.S. Post Office on Friday, Nov. 13, to celebrate the circulation of a commemorative postage stamp of the 1950s television character Howdy Doody. Most of the puppets on the western-themed children’s program “Howdy Doody” were created in part by Rose’s parents, Margo and Rufus Rose. When Rose came to Yellow Springs to attend Antioch College in the 1950s, he continued with puppetry and theater and later served as director of the Antioch College theater department. Postmaster Dave Kennedy presented Rose with a photo of the Howdy Doody postage stamp, which was released by the U.S. Postal Service in August as part of a series of stamps to honor the Golden Age of Television. Gathered to celebrate the event was a small crowd of locals young enough to be mesmerized by the charm of Pepito, including Miles Gilchrist, above, and old enough to remember sitting in front of the television and hearing the words, “Say, kids, what time is it? It’s Howdy Doody Time!”
