Hilary McLellan
Hilary McLellan of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.,
died on October 3 after a 30-month fight with cancer. Hilary graduated
from high school in Paris, France; earned a bachelors from the University
of California-Riverside, a masters from Miami University of Ohio and a
Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.
Hilary was a media artist, storyteller and educator. She had a background
in art history, ceramic art, environmental science, design, instructional
design and educational media. She was involved with digital media for
over 20 years. Her background encompassed business, science technology
and the arts. She had extensive experience developing and teaching classes
and workshops online. She taught educational media at Kansas State University
and Empire State University. At Kansas State she designed online course
templates, including very popular courses in digital storytelling and
environmental studies. For several years she covered the virtual reality
industry for Virtual Reality World and other publications. She edited
the book Situated Learning Perspectives (1996) and she published numerous
articles in digital learning.
Hilary participated in and reported on restructuring information for democracy
in Poland in the early 1990s and she helped to implement conferences on
emerging media in New York City, San Jose and London. She interviewed
numerous scientists, engineers and emerging media-virtual reality pioneers.
In recent years she designed Web sites for community projects, brought
her gifts for storytelling to young children, families and seniors in
the Albany region; and taught digital storytelling to middle school students.
She campaigned for local political issues and candidates with great passion
and served on the Saratoga Springs Historic Preservation board. She was
a loving and generous wife, daughter, sister and stepmother. She found
beauty in the world and shared her discoveries with us all and she will
be much missed.
Hilary is survived by her husband, Roger B. Wyatt of Saratoga Springs,
N.Y.; her stepson, Owen Wyatt of Boston, Mass.; her parents, David S.
and Ann Handforth McLellan of Yellow Springs; her sister Marjorie L. McLellan
(Gary Greenberg); niece, Cara Sande Greenberg of Columbus; nephew, Jesse
Greenberg, Sherman Oaks, Calif.; another sister, Michele McLellan of Columbia,
Mo.; and brother, Eric D. McLellan and his daughter, Hypatia, who are
both of Yellow Springs.
A memorial service was held October 24 in Saratoga Springs.
