sports Bulldog Sports Round-up Football team bests Riverview Yellow Springs played solid defense all night long to keep Riverview out of the end zone and seal the win. With two wins, seven losses and two games still to go, the team is on its way to improving on last year’s season record of 2–8. Other offensive leaders on Friday were Ian Wimberly, with four catches for 56 yards and a touchdown, and Ameer Wagner, who had three catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Wagner had six and a half tackles and two and a half sacks. Devonne Freeman had six and a half tackles, and Jeremy Paul had six tackles. Boys soccer team ends 8–5–3 Tuesday was Senior Night for Yellow Springs, and senior forward Chris Johnson wasted no time netting what would turn out to be the game-winning goal just 49 seconds into the young contest. Johnson scored an insurance goal in the second half with an assist from fellow senior Alexis Onfroy, who later scored his own goal by dribbling through the Indians’ defense to rip a shot into the back of their net. Against Xenia Christian, Johnson again opened the Bulldog scoring account early, scoring on a loose ball, before Yellow Springs found itself on the wrong side of a 2–1 halftime deficit. Jake Trumbull came out in the second half to level the score on his first touch of the game by heading in one of 12 throw-ins from Kody McDonald. On Saturday against Northwestern, the Bulldogs fell behind, but Mario Cosey evened things up by heading in McDonald’s deflected cross. McDonald netted one of his own, finishing a fast break to goal with an assist by Onfroy to put Yellow Springs out front 2–1. Johnson scored the last goal for the tie. Girls soccer team ends season Boy harriers second in MBC Sophomore Nathaniel Reed placed seventh in 18:56, a personal best on the course, good enough for the MBC All Conference first team. Second-team honors went to senior Birch Robinson-Hubbuch, ninth in 19:17, and junior Gabe Amrhein, 10th in 19:20. Junior Josh Meadows finished 18th in 20:01, and sophomore Zach McHugh was 23rd in 20:17. Lady harriers third in MBC Miller was second overall in 21:29, and Wiggins took fifth in 22:09 to earn first team all-league recognition. Reini Brickson was 11th; Hannah Kumbusky was 16th and Mary Triplett was 28th to complete the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs. McKinney wins MBC The McKinney girls were led by Talia Boutis and Michaela Roe in second and third places, and Christina Brewer, Lilly Rudolf and Sage HaleWolfe completed the scoring. Book for Chesire T-ball coach Coach Jimmy Chesire is retiring, and plans are underway to commemorate his 25 years of dedication to young people and t-ball with a memory book. Susan Hyde is requesting pictures and/or stories about t-ball players and/or Jimmy, from t-ball players and their families past and present. Susan requests submissions to her by Oct. 15, because of the need to lay out the book chronologically and to prepare it for next summer. She suggests making copies of items submitted, and identifying on a sticky note the first and last names of people and the year, on the back of photos. For stories, include complete names and the year. Send all items to Susan Hyde, 1405 President Street, Yellow Springs, OH 45387-1326; or e-mail susanhyde@aol.com and include your name and phone number. Youth ball sign-up All fourth, fifth and sixth-grade girls and boys who are interested in playing on the Yellow Springs (traveling) youth basketball team need to attend the sign up meeting on Friday, Oct. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at the Mills Lawn gymnasium. Practices will start soon, and games are scheduled to begin in January 2010. Come to the sign up to meet the coaches and to learn more about this fun and exciting program.
