Robert Siegel

Robert Siegel, 85 of Southern Shores, N.C., and Pleasantville, N.Y., died at home in Southern Shores on September 17, from complications of polycythemia vera.

Bob Siegel began attending Antioch in 1942. His time there was interrupted by his service in WWII as an ensign in the Pacific. He originally intended to major in architecture but upon returning to Antioch he majored in political science, graduating in 1949. One co-op job, at the NLRB in New Orleans, influenced his decision to become a lawyer, and following graduation from Antioch in 1948 he attended Yale Law School. He then married Norma Kaiden Siegel (Antioch class of 1948).

Bob briefly practiced law and then spent the majority of his career running Arrow Photo Service, a photographic service business. In his fifties Bob returned to school, studying his true passion, architecture, at CCNY. After graduating from CCNY he practiced architecture until 1993 when he and his wife retired to Southern Shores.

Bob is survived by his children Joanne Siegel (Antioch ’75) and Peter Siegel (Antioch ’78), his brothers Dick Siegel (Antioch ’47) and David Siegel Medcalf (Antioch ’43), his sister-in-law Libby Epstein Siegel (Antioch ’49) and his grandchildren Erica and Sarah Siegel. In addition he had two nephews who attended Antioch. He also had many lifelong good friends from Antioch.

Throughout his life Bob pursued his love of art through studying, designing and building. He designed additions to both his houses in Usonia and Southern Shores. He built stone walls and cabinets. In retirement Bob volunteered for SCORE, served as president of the Southern Shores Civic Association, was chairman of the Architecture Review Board and designed some projects for the town, including a gazebo on the dunes at Southern Shores Beach. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his positive outlook on life, his strong belief in civil liberties, and his love of family, architecture and education. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service was held October 10. Contributions in his memory may be made to ACLU or Community Home Care and Hospice of Elizabeth City, N.C.

Willis O’Connor memorial

The friends and relatives of Willis O’Connor are invited to attend a memorial service for him on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 3 p.m. in Rockford Chapel on the Antioch College campus.
