Alexis Onfroy led the Bulldog boys soccer team to a 2–0 victory against Middletown Christian on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Toronto takes football game

The YSHS football team lost 51–6 to Toronto High School on Friday, Sept. 18.

Bulldog Roland Newsome brought down Toronto’s kickoff at their 30-yard line, but the visitors scored in the first three minutes of the game. That was followed by four touch downs in the first quarter.

In the second period, the Bulldogs got the ball at first and ten. Newsome threw a 28-yard pass to Ian Wimberly, who ran 30 yards for the Bulldogs’ one and only touchdown.

For the Bulldogs, Newsome had nine tackles, 10 yards rushing and 58 passing. Devonne Freeman had two tackles and 70 yards rushing, while Ian Wimberly had one tackle and 80 yards rushing. Ameer Wagner had 20 tackles, Jeremy Paul had eight, and David Teyber and Jacob Fugate each had four. Tyler Bruntz, Tony Parker, Addison Pettiford, Tyler Qualls and Antone Truss added to the Bulldogs’ tackles for the night.

Golf team finishes 8–13

YSHS played its last golf match of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Locust Hills and lost to Cedarville 177–188. For Yellow Springs, Carl Wiener shot 42, Lucas Donnell had 48, Wade Huston 47 and Zeb Reichert had 51. The Bulldogs finished their season at 8–13.

Volleyball team wins 2, loses 2

The Lady Bulldogs varsity volleyball team made it an even week winning games against Meadowdale on Wednesday, Sept. 16, and Ponitz Career Tech on Monday, Sept. 21, and losing games to Middletown Christian on Tuesday, Sept. 15, and Xenia Christian on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Against Middletown, Yellow Springs lost 17–25, 10–25, 17–25, with outside hitter Jenna Boettcher grabbing four kills, two aces; and setter Alex Beer with four assists.

Against Meadowdale, the Bulldogs had a good serving game and won 25–9, 25–6, 26–24. Boettcher had three kills, nine aces and a dig. Marlee Layh (middle hitter) had two kills, five blocks and Brittany Sheets (outside hitter) had three kills, five aces.

Against Xenia, the Lady Bulldogs lost a close match at 20–25, 19–25, 21–25.

Against Ponitz, the Bulldogs won 25–16, 26–24, 25–14. Beer led the effort with 15 assists and two digs. Layh had six kills, three aces, and Natasha Perry had three kills, five aces.

Junior high volleyball wins three

The Yellow Springs junior varsity volleyball team won all three of its matches last week against Middletown Christian (25–23, 25–11), Meadowdale (25–14, 25–18) and Xenia Christian (26–24, 25–14). 

Against Middletown, Adrianne Beer led the effort with nine points, two aces. Against Meadowdale, Angela Allen was the high scorer with nine points, three aces, five kills and a block. Against Xenia, Beer was again top Lady Dog with 15 points, three aces and three assists.

Girls soccer team loses one

In a heartbreaking nail-biter at home on Tuesday, Sept. 15, the YSHS girls soccer team lost 1–0 to the Middletown Christian Eagles.

Yellow Springs pressured the Eagles from the start, taking eight shots on goal and holding Middletown to just four attempts in the first half. First-half keeper Maryah Martin shut out the Lady Eagles, with help from Yellow Springs defense. The Lady Bulldogs turned up the heat in the second half with nine more shots on goal, while keeper Robbie Weigand held off five Eagle attempts and made one amazing save to keep her team in the game. Middletown finally scored off a corner kick late in the game. Senior Salome Garcia took three shots on goal, while Kelsey Cundiff, Keturah Fulton, Paloma Wiggins, Martin and Mary Triplett each made two attempts.

Miller third at Eaton for girls

The YSHS girls cross country team took on some of the best competition in the state at Eaton Invitational Saturday, Sept. 19. Unfazed at facing #1 ranked Mister, #6 ranked Fort Loramie and #11 Russia, Lois Miller led all of the Bulldogs with a third place finish out of 110 runners in the varsity race in 20:25, just in arrears of Minster’s top runner who set the torrid pace.

Teammates Paloma Wiggins and Reini Brickson posted lifetime bests for the 5-kilometer distance.

Boys at Eaton tightly contested

A large field of over 130 runners from 22 schools toed the starting line at Eaton on Saturday, where the Bulldogs finished ninth.

The Bulldogs were led by the 27th place finish of Gabe Amrhein, and Birch Robinson-Hubbuch’s season best of 19:25 also played a vital role in the final outcome.
