sports Bulldog Sports Round-up
Girls soccer team plays aggressive The YSHS girls soccer team had its best game thus far in the season against Summit Country Day in Cincinnati on Saturday, Sept. 12. Though Yellow Springs lost 6–0, the team played aggressive soccer and got six shots on Summit’s goal. At the start, the Lady Bulldogs gave up five quick goals, one a self score and one on a penalty kick, before forcing the ball onto the opponents’ defense to gain control of the field for the last 60 minutes of the 80-minute game. Anne Weigand, Tasha Fox, Keturah Fulton, Elizabeth Malone, Lydia Jewett and Anna Khan defended their goal for keeper Maryah Martin, who had 15 saves. Volleyball team loses 1, wins 2 The Bulldog volleyball team got off to a rough start against Dayton Christian on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and went down in three games 8–25, 11–25, 12–25. Maiya Thornton and Angela Allen both had four aces in the match. Against Jefferson on Thursday, Sept. 10, the Lady Bulldogs found their rhythm and won 25–16, 25–17, 25–23. The Bulldogs started strong with key serving from Natasha Perry and Jenna Boettcher. Brittany Sheets also had 13 unanswered points. Against Belmont on Saturday, Sept. 12, Yellow Springs continued its winning ways to take the match 25–18, 25–6, 24–26, 25–14. The Bulldogs showed aggressive offensive and defensive play from Marlee Layh, who had nine kills, three blocks and an ace; Perry, with six kills, three aces and an assist; and setter Alex Beer, who had one kill, two aces and 10 assists. Boys soccer team wins 1, loses 2 Playing three times in five days this past week, the YSHS boys soccer team dropped games against the Dayton Christian Warriors, 5–1, on Thursday, Sept. 10, and the Fairbanks Panthers, 5–2, on Saturday, Sept. 12, but stopped Spring Valley Academy cold, 9–0, the following Monday, to post a 4–4 season record. Bulldog fans were sorely tested last week at Dayton and again at Fairbanks as they witnessed what could best be described as soccer amnesia by the local side. Poor defensive marking, weak defensive challenges and failure to finish upfront cost the ’Dogs dearly in both contests. The lone bright spots for Yellow Springs in both games were the long-range goals by Jake “The Sniper” Trumbull. With time running out in the first half against Dayton, Trumbull ran onto a cleared ball to hit a left-footed screamer from 35 yards out into the right upper-90. At Fairbanks Trumbull pushed up from his defensive position onto a loose ball and let fly another 30-yard rip. What looked like a season on life support found a second chance on the home field against Spring Valley. Alexis Onfroy netted four goals for the night, while Mario Cosey had two, and Chris Johnson, Kody McDonald and Trumbull each had one. McDonald picked up three assists; Trumbull had two and Alex Nickels had one. Isaac Haller and McDonald preserved a clean sheet in goal. Boys harriers win in Xenia The Bulldog boys cross country team came away as champions for the second straight year on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the 10th Xenia Christian Invitational. The Bulldogs, led by Gabe Amrhein, edged out Shellby County powerhouse Jackson Center. Cedarville finished fourth. Gaining strength in numbers, the Bulldogs clawed their way through hills, with Amrhein out front to finish fifth in 19:08, followed by sophomores Zach McHugh and Nathaniel Reed, who each swept past half a dozen competitors in a hard charge to their eighth and ninth place finishes. Josh Meadows ended in 16th place, while Mitchell Brickson and Birch Robinson-Hubbuch finished in 22nd and 23rd places out of 90 runners. The Bulldogs were upset by Mechanicsburg at the home meet at John Bryan park on Thursday, Sept. 10. Girls win Bulldog Invitational YSHS harriers Lois Milller, Paloma Wiggins and Reini Brickson swept the field at the Bulldog Invitational at John Bryan State Park on Thursday, Sept. 10. Before a large crowd of spectators, the girls squad topped Mechanicsburg, with Hannah Kumbusky finishing fifth and Mary Triplett placing eighth to complete the team’s scoring. At Xenia Christian on Saturday, Sept. 12, Miller and Wiggins both finished in the top five. Bulldog football bows to Cedarville The YSHS football team took its third loss in as many games to Cedarville on Friday, Sept. 11. The Bulldogs went down 48–14. Bulldog Ameer Wagner received the opening kick-off and ran for an astronomical 50 yards to help the Bulldogs to the 5-yard line, where they were unable to score. Cedarville’s takeover on the 3-yard line marked the beginning of the end. The Indians got their first touchdown and extra point just seven and a half minutes into the game, and by the end of the first half the Indians were up 21–0. Bulldog Tony Parker made an interception in the second half and orchestrated a 75-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs on the score board. Then in the fourth quarter, quarterback Ryan Newsome threw a 40-yard pass to Ian Wimberly that brought the Bulldogs to the 8-yard line, where Newsome took the ball in for Yellow Springs’ second and final touchdown. Newsome completed 12 passes out of 22 for 171 yards, with two interceptions. Devonne Freeman was 33 yards rushing; Tony Parker was 55 yards receiving; Wimberly was 60 yards receiving; AJ Wagner had seven solo tackles and four assisted tackles and David Teyber had two tackles. Memory book for Coach Chesire T-ball coach Jimmy Chesire is retiring, and plans are underway to commemorate his 25 years of dedication to young people and t-ball with a memory book. Susan Hyde is requesting pictures and/or stories about t-ball players and/or Jimmy, from t-ball players and their families past and present. Susan requests submissions to her by Oct. 15, because of the need to lay out the book chronologically and to prepare it for next summer. She suggests making copies of items submitted, and identifying on a sticky note the first and last names of people and the year, on the back of photos. For stories, include complete names and the year. Send all items to Susan Hyde, 1405 President Street, Yellow Springs, OH 45387-1326; or e-mail susanhyde@aol.com and include your name and phone number.
