Boys soccer wins two
The YSHS boys soccer team added two more to the
win-column last week against West Liberty Salem on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and
Sidney Lehman on Saturday, Sept. 5.
Sloppy first-half play by Yellow Springs against West
Liberty led to a Tiger score off a penalty kick. The goal was answered
before the half-time when Kody McDonald served up a tasty cross that Ryan
Phillips headed in from 14 yards. Awakened from their first-half slumber,
Yellow Springs scored three unanswered goals by McDonald, Alexis Onfroy
and AJ Wagner to earn a 4–1 decision.
The game against Sidney Lehman was a rematch of last
fall’s district championship, which the Cavaliers won 2–1
in sudden death overtime. After 30 scoreless minutes of play, Lehman scored,
and then Jacob Trumbull lobbed a 50-yard bomb that turned into a goalkeeper’s
worst nightmare as the ball dropped just under the crossbar and slipped
through the keeper’s fingers to knot up the score. In the second
half, Phillips came out of the goal to spur his teammates on by heading
in Wagner’s throw-in, while skillful passing from Nicky Sontag,
Will Turner and Onfroy led to a Bulldog 40-yard winning goal at 3–2.
Girls soccer falls behind
The Lady Bulldog soccer team lost 6–1 to a Sidney
Lehman powerhouse on Saturday, Sept. 5, in which Anna Karling Khan scored
the team’s only goal, unassisted. The Yellow Springs team then lost
3–0 to Dayton Christian on Tuesday, Sept. 8, when keeper Katie Triplett
held back the Warriors with dozens of saves and Lucy Callahan had a near-miss
on a goal.
Football loses to Greeneview
The Bulldog football team was overtaken by Greeneview
44–6 on Friday, Sept. 4.
On a Bulldog possession in the first quarter, quarterback
Ryan Newsome ran the ball for a 47-yard first down and then completed
passes of 20 yards or under to Tony Parker, Ian Wimberly and Devone Freeman
for first downs. Roland Newsome took a short stint as quarterback and
ran for 17 yards.
With Greeneview up 21–0 in the second half, Ryan
Newsome threw a 35-yard pass to Parker. Then from the 15-yard line, Newsome
threw to Freeman for a touch down. The extra point was blocked.
The Rams controlled the remainder of the game, in which
Ryan Newsome passed for a total of 170 yards and rushed for 90 yards.
Bulldogs’ Sam Morrison had seven solo tackles, and Freeman and AJ
Wagner had five tackles each. Parker had a total of 39 receiving yards
and for his touchdown, Freeman had outstanding blocking by Jeremy Paul.
Volleyball team 0–3
The Bulldog volleyball team got off to a slow
start this season, going down in four games the first two matches against
Emmanuel Christian and Miami Valley last week.
On Tuesday, Sept. 1, Emmanuel won 4–25, 17–25,
25–23, 19–25. Standing out were middle-hitters Marlee Layh,
with five kills, two blocks, three aces and two assists, and Maya Hardman
with four kills, four blocks and two aces.
Against Miami Valley on Thursday, Sept. 3, the score
was 20–25, 25–19, 14–25, 18–25. Libero Nancy Epling
got 12 digs, while setter Natasha Perry went in for a kill, two blocks,
three aces and nine assists. Outside hitter Jenna Boettcher had six kills,
two blocks and five aces.
Cross country wins at Hillsboro
Both the boys and girls cross country teams ripped
their competition on Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Ohio Classic Invitational
in Hillsboro. Surprising everyone, the Bulldog boys team won the race,
topping pre-race favorite New Richmond 46 to 51 (low score wins). Georgetown
was third with 85 points, while Metro Buckeye Conference rival Xenia Christian
was sixth.
Leading the Bulldog pack, junior Gabe Amrhein charged
through the first mile in just 5:33 and held on to finish fourth overall
in 18:59. Joining Amrhein in the top 10 was sophomore Nathaniel Reed in
sixth place, senior Birch Robinson-Hubbuch in 11th place, and juniors
Mitchell Brickson and Josh Meadows with 13th and 15th place finishes.
For the girls team at Hillsboro, freshman Lois Miller
made a decisive charge to finish first in 20:29, an average of 6:37 per
mile. Paloma Wiggins placed third, and captain Reini Brickson was eighth.
New Richmond narrowly won the meet, with Xenia Christian
in second, and the Bulldogs in a solid third place, just eight points
behind the winners.
