Let’s do it again next summer
One Friday night this summer, downtown pulsed
with music. I was heading home from the Yellow Springs Strings concert
at the First Presbyterian Church when I passed the Emporium. The rock
and roll sounds of a live band spilled out the door, as they do each Friday
night. But this night there was more. As I rounded the corner of Corry
Street, people were outside on the plaza dancing to the blues and rock
music of Jeanne Ulrich and Slipstream. And across Dayton Street, an appreciative
crowd watched as Soul Fire Tribe performed its magic at Brother Bear’s.
Clearly, this is one lively village.
But it was just another night of Summer in the Springs,
the series of special events that made each weekend a party. As well as
helping the local economy by attracting visitors to town, the effort helped
build community by bringing villagers together. The concerts, plays and
performances spotlighted an astonishing array of local talent. Those of
us who never want to leave town had even more reason to stay.
My favorite event was Juju’s Dance Piazza, when
DJ Juju spun world music and oldies on the Corry Street plaza, beneath
the stars and little white lights. Dancing outside on a summer night —
is there anything better? Little kids loved it, and teenagers seemed to,
as well. There’s something about moving to music together that turns
even those you don’t know well into friends.
So thanks, DJ Juju. And thanks to all who shared their
talents. Of course, the big kudos go to those at the Chamber of Commerce,
the Arts Council and YS Kids Playhouse, who spent countless hours putting
the whole thing together. Thanks for making our lively town even livelier.
