Candidates needed
Village Council needs you. That is, Council needs you
if you care about Village issues and want to run for a Council seat in
the Nov. 3 election. With just a week left to file, only two candidates
are running so far, although three Council seats are open.
Incumbent Council members Judith Hempfling and Karen
Wintrow have taken out petitions for the seats, and stated their intention
to run. The third Council member whose term expires, Kathryn Van der Heiden,
has stated she’s undecided about running. By the beginning of this
week, she had not yet taken out a petition.
Of course, for a vibrant election, it’s important
to have more than one candidate for each open seat. The more people who
run, the more new ideas villagers hear and explore, and the greater benefit
for all. Especially needed on Council are representatives of the growing
group of young families who live in the village.
Sitting on Council is undeniably a demanding job, especially
in this opinionated town. But it’s also a rewarding one, in that
Council members’ actions clearly shape Yellow Springs. The new Council
will address issues critical to the Village’s future, such as economic
development, alternative energy use, affordable housing and green space
preservation. It’s an exciting time to live in the village, and
an exciting time to be on Council.
Villagers interested in running for Council need to
take out a petition at the Greene County Board of Elections at 651 Dayton-Xenia
Road, Xenia, 937-562-7470. There’s still time to collect the signatures
of the required 35 voters (double that amount is recommended) by the Aug.
20 deadline.
But act quickly. Council needs you now.
