Bulldog Sports Roundup

Boys win MBC track meet
Yellow Springs blew away the local competition at the Metro Buckeye Conference meet on Friday, May 15, bringing home a win for the boys and a second place finish for the girls. Out of eight teams present, the Bulldog boys won with 184 points, followed by Dayton Christian with 113 and Troy Christian with 90.

Focusing in on its strength in numbers, the Bulldog boys’ astoundingly unified relay team of Anthony Pettiford, Brock GunderKline, Josh Meadows and Alexis Onfroy swept the field in both the 4x400 (3:39) and the 4x800 (9.35) for two clear 10-point wins.

Brock GunderKline won the 800 in 2:11, with Onfroy finishing in a close second in 2:16. The reverse scenario won the Bulldogs another 18 points, when Onfroy won the mile in 4:56.6, with Jacob GunderKline nipping at his heels for second place in 4:57. And in a parallel universe, Jacob Gunder-Kline won the 2-mile run in 10:43, with Gabe Amrhein posting a second place finish just 15 seconds later. The next closest finisher was almost a minute behind.

Chris Johnson won the long jump in 20'1", with no one else even close.

Steve Scott was second in shot put with 38', and he also took second in the discus with a throw of 116'7", followed by Ernest Johnson, who took third.

Trying his luck in the field events, Brock GunderKline joined Antone Truss in a second place tie at the high jump in 5’8.

Meadows took second in the 110 hurdles in 18.1, and also finished second in the 300 hurdles in 46 seconds. Mario Cosey was second in the 100 dash in 11.15 seconds. In the 400 dash, Pettiford took second place in 54.7

The 4x100 relay of Cosey, Raphael Allen, Chris Johnson and Logan Norris-Sayres took third place. The same foursome also took third in the 4x200 relay.

Lady ’Dogs second at MBC
The YSHS girls track team finished second of eight teams at the conference meet held on Friday, May 15, at Troy Christian High School. Yellow Springs had 92 points, behind Miami Valley with 57 points and ahead of Middletown Christian with 80.

Stepping out for the Lady Bulldogs, the winged feet of Elizabeth Gonder, Brenda Jones, Ryder Comstock and Melodie Wright took flight to win the 4x200 relay in 1:53.2, fractions of a second better than their qualifying time. A nearly identical 4x100 team of Gonder, Paige Evans, Comstock and Wright took second in 54.29, and yet another variation on the Comstock, Gonder, Wright theme joined with Reini Brickson to take second in the 4x400 in 4:34.

Wright used her excessively long legs to capture the 200-meter dash in 27.23 seconds, half a hair ahead of the field of hopefuls. Comstock took second in the long jump in 13'7", while Evans was second in the shotput with a launch of 26'7".

Brickson took third in the high jump in 4'6". She also finished third in the mile run in 6:34. Brenda Jones finished third in the 100 hurdles in 19.1, and she took fourth in the 100 dash.

Challenger Soccer to return to village

Yellow Springs Soccer, Inc., a non-profit organization which promotes the enhancement of soccer in the Yellow Springs community, will host the third annual Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp this summer. The soccer camp will be held June 22–26 at the boys’ soccer practice field located behind the Yellow Springs High School.

Kids between the ages of 3–18 have a wide variety of camps to choose from, including shortened camps for the youngest to half- and full-day camps. Given the success of previous camps, this year organizers are offering more choices for soccer camps, including a goalkeeping camp.

Participants will receive a free soccer jersey if they register online by May 8. A soccer ball and t-shirt are provided to those who register before the start of camp.

The cost of the camp varies depending on which camp is attended, with a range between $65 and $149 for the week-long camps. Brochures are available at all Yellow Springs schools, the Yellow Springs Community Library and the Bryan Community Center. For additional information and registration go to www.challengersports.com. Questions may also be directed to Daniel Miller at Challenger Sports, 866-255-4229, or to the local camp coordinator, Lauren Miller, at 767-2072.

YSSI continues to sell hooded sweatshirts to raise additional funds for the renovation of the soccer fields on the corner of East Enon Road and Dayton-Yellow Springs Road, which began last year. These sweatshirts may be purchased by contacting Miller at 767-2072. Tax-deductible donations of any amount will be greatly appreciated and may be made to Yellow Springs Soccer Inc, P.O.
