Boys track wins home meet
The Yellow Springs High School boys track team won its home meet Thursday, April 30, with 162 points against tough competition from Wayne with 122 and four other schools. The day was a great warm-up for this week’s Bulldog Invitational, scheduled for Friday, May 8. The Wayne Invitational scheduled for Friday, May 1, was canceled due to inclement weather. The Bulldogs also competed at the Springfield Shawnee Invitational on Tuesday, May 5.

At the home meet Thursday for the Bulldogs, the 4x800 relay squad of Josh Meadows, Mitchell Brickson, Zach McHugh and Anthony Pettiford kicked off the evening’s win with a victory in 9:19. Mario Cosey kept the winning going with a 11.1 win in the 100-meter dash. Antone Truss won the high jump with a leap of 5'6". Also leaping to victory was Raphael Allen, who took the long jump with a 18'6.5" flight, followed by Chris Johnson at a close second in 18'3.5," and Truss third in the Bulldog sweep.

The 4x400-meter relay insured the team’s win with a first-place time of 3:52.5. Second place 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relays added major points to the team’s score as well. Steve Scott was second in the shot put, and Gabe Amrhein in the 3200-meter run and McHugh in the 800-meter run helped the Bulldogs hold off Wayne for the victory. Meadows took third in the 110-meter high hurdles and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles, which also added major points for Yellow Springs.

Bulldog Invitational May 8
Track and field, often viewed as a three-ring circus, will pitch its big top at YSHS this Friday, May 8, for the 9th annual Bulldog Invitational. Twelve schools will go head to head, beginning at 4:45 p.m. with field events, and track events at 5:30. Several stars of the past will be honored, including Andrew Pierce in the 400-meter dash, the Borchers’ Mile and the Tina Peters’ Race Walk.

Girls track fourth at home meet
The YSHS girls track team placed fourth out of six teams with 46 points at the home meet on Thursday, April 30. Wayne ran away with the meet with 155 points. Scoring the bulk of the Lady Bulldogs’ points was Melodie Wright, with wins in the 400-meter and 200-meter dashes, and Reini Brickson, who won the high jump and finished second in both the 400-meter dash and the 3200-meter run.

Miller leads McKinney meet
The star of McKinney Middle School’s last three track meets has been eighth-grade distance runner Lois Miller, who broke her second school record in as many weeks when she won the Waynesville Invitational 800-meter run in 2:32.1 on Saturday, April 25. Anita Allen, who went on to set several high school marks, held the old record.

Also breaking records at the Waynesville meet were the 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads, who led the girls team to a fourth-place finish out of the 12 schools. The 400 relay of Briana Ayers, Talia Boutis, Rachele Orme and Michaela Roe lowered the school record by 0.5 seconds to win in 57.3. In the 4x400-meter relay, Miller, Angela Allen, Roe and Boutis ran individual PR’s and pulverized the school record by 11 seconds to set a new record of 4:46.0. All told, 16 new personal records were set by the McKinney boys and girls teams at the Waynesville meet.

The next McKinney home meet is Saturday, May 9, at 2 p.m., followed by the conference championships on Saturday, May 16.

Boys baseball topple Xenia
Due to last week’s rainouts, the YSHS baseball team only got in one game on Monday, May 4, a 14–11 victory against Xenia Nazarene. The Bulldogs continued their hot hitting, with Jamie Kitzmiller going four for five with three singles, a triple and four RBI’s. Kevin Sikes-Gilbert, ranked number one in hitting in the Dayton area with a .605 batting average, was close behind with three hits and three runs scored. Tyler Fox got three hits, including a double, and Lucas Donnell continued his hitting with three singles. The Bulldogs’ hard hitting gave them the victory over Xenia, with Donnell getting the win.

Challenger Soccer to return to village

Yellow Springs Soccer, Inc., a non-profit organization which promotes the enhancement of soccer in the Yellow Springs community, will host the third annual Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp this summer. The soccer camp will be held June 22–26 at the boys’ soccer practice field located behind the Yellow Springs High School.

Kids between the ages of 3–18 have a wide variety of camps to choose from, including shortened camps for the youngest to half and full day camps. Given the success of previous camps, this year organizers are offering more choices for soccer camps, including a goalkeeping camp.

Participants will receive a free soccer jersey if they register online by May 8. A soccer ball and t-shirt are provided to those who register before the start of camp.

The cost of the camp varies depending on which camp is attended, with a range between $65 and $149 for the week-long camps. Brochures are available at all Yellow Springs schools, the Yellow Springs Community Library and the Bryan Community Center. For additional information and registration go to www.challengersports.com. Questions may also be directed to Daniel Miller at Challenger Sports, 866-255-4229, or to the local camp coordinator, Lauren Miller, at 767-2072.

YSSI continues to sell hooded sweatshirts to raise additional funds for the renovation of the soccer fields on the corner of East Enon Road and Dayton-Yellow Springs Road, which began last year. These sweatshirts may be purchased by contacting Miller at 767-2072. Tax deductible donations of any amount will be greatly appreciated and may be made be to Yellow Springs Soccer Inc, P.O. 3on3 youth bball tourney planned

The Yellow Springs girls summer 3on3 program is sponsoring a 3on3 tournament for boys and girls on Street Fair day, June 13, at the Bryan Community Center outdoor courts.

The goals of the tournament are to stimulate interest in basketball and to raise funds to support the girls summer 3on3 program, which is aiming to expand to include teams for all grades from middle through high school. Last summer, a group of middle school girls traveled to several tournaments in Ohio, improved their skills, and had lots of fun in the process.

Planning for the Street Fair tournament has already begun. Additional volunteers are needed to handle various aspects of the tourney as well as to organize and transport teams to tournaments in other towns. Contact Rich Miller for more information at richmiller1@gmail.com.

Seadogs meeting, sign up

The Seadogs will hold their final organizational meeting before the swim season starts at the Yellow Springs Community Library, Tuesday, May 5, at 7 p.m. Registration for the swim team will be held Monday, June 1, between 6 and 7:30 p.m., at the Yellow Springs High School cafeteria.
