Ladies swim to fourth
The Yellow Springs girls swim team pulled out another strong meet at the Shawnee Invitational on Friday, Jan. 24. With just five swimmers, the Lady Bulldogs placed fourth overall with 58 points out of 17 teams. Ahead of them were first place Tipp City with 152 points, second place Springfield Kenton Ridge with 89 and third place Bellefontaine with 59 points.

Yellow Springs’ 200-yard medley relay team of senior Claire Triplett, junior Barbara Jewell, freshman Elizabeth Malone and freshman Erika Chick took second in 2:12 for 14 points. The Bulldogs pushed for the touch less than a second ahead of two other teams at their fins.

The same team took third in the 200-free relay in 1:56, to win the team 12 points.

Malone parted water to arrive first in the 100 backstroke, improving her best time by more than two seconds to 1:04. That individual victory won the team nine points. Malone also motored to second place in the 200 free in 2:03, two seconds behind Springfield Kenton Ridge’s number one, but nine seconds ahead of the rest of the pool. The ’Dogs got seven points for that one. Barbara Jewell came in 10th in the same race.

Chick jetted for first touch in the 100 free in 57.27, and then settled for second in the 200 individual medley in 2:18, just fractions of a second behind Tipp City’s first place swimmer.

Claire Triplett swam the 100 breast and the 50 free. Mary Triplett swam the 100 breast and the 50 free, improving her times by several seconds in each event. Jewell placed 16th in the 100 breast.

Zane Reichert, the Bulldogs’ lone boy swimmer, placed 19 out of 38 in the 100 free. He also swam the 50 free.

Girls keep on winning
The YSHS girls basketball team continued its winning ways with a fourth straight victory over the Jefferson Broncos 73–24 on Monday, Jan. 26. The Lady Bulldogs had control from the start, scoring 22 points in the first quarter and holding Jefferson to nine points. Ashanta Robinson matched Jefferson’s output with nine points in the first quarter. The second quarter was identical to the first, with Melodie Wright (eight points, nine rebounds), and Reini Brickson (five points, five rebounds) leading the second quarter charge. Up 34–16 at the half time, Yellow Springs came out strong in the second half with full court pressure defense, breaking the game open with 18 points to Jefferson’s five for the quarter.

Defense determined the game’s outcome, with the Lady Bulldogs scoring double digits in each quarter and holding Jefferson to single digits. Robinson finished with her second high school career triple-double with 25 points, 10 rebounds and 11 steals. She needed three assists to achieve a quadruple double. Stephanie Scott was in foul trouble most of the game, but finished with 13 points, six assists and six steals. 

Boys basketball bests MVS 
The YSHS boys basketball team played just one game last week due to snowy weather, which forced the cancellation of two varsity games against Xenia Christian and Dayton Jefferson and a freshman/junior varsity game against Alter. Yellow Springs handily beat Miami Valley 70–32 on Saturday, Jan. 31. Bulldog starting point guard Ian Wimberly, who usually hands out assists, was the team’s lead scorer with a career high tally of 14 points for the game. Wimberly also dished out three assists, and pulled out four rebounds and three steals. Kevin Sikes-Gilbert spent the game setting up teammates and finding the open shooter to hand out a career-high eight assists. Sikes-Gilbert also scored seven points and had three steals. Joe Fugate torched the Rams for his season high 10 points while grabbing four rebounds.

The Bulldogs got a solid game from Raphael Allen, 11 points, nine rebounds, two assists and five steals. Tyler Fox’s sharp shooting earned him six points, and his overall play was “the best we have seen from Tyler this year,” Coach Brad Newsome said. Fox also added three rebounds, two assists and three steals to his performance. Every Bulldog player contributed to the all-out win.
