Good process, good pick

Mark Cundiff, the new Village manager who starts his job on Monday, seems an excellent choice for the position. His hiring culminated a search process that was efficient, timely, respectful, inclusive and productive. Many people deserve thanks for this good work.

The biggest kudos go to Council members Judith Hempfling, Karen Wintrow, Kathryn Van der Heiden, John Booth and Lori Askeland. Former manager Eric Swansen’s June departure put a huge, unexpected task on Council’s already overcrowded plate. Council was wise to make the new manager search its first priority, as much as possible. With the help of Village Solicitor John Chambers, Council hired an exceptional interim manager, John Weithofer, and also streamlined the search process by bringing on board University of Dayton consultant Don Vermillion. Council provided significant opportunities for community participation, including asking a selected group of villagers to informally interview each finalist. Most of all, Council members gave what Weithofer recently described as “a ton of time” to the process.

Weithofer, who hit the ground running, contributed by keeping Village business humming along while Council conducted its search. In her usual knowledgeable way, Council Clerk Deborah Benning helped Council stay on track. The citizens chosen by Council to interview the three finalists — Benji Maruyama, Ellen Hoover, Maureen Lynch, Krista Magaw, Kathleen Boutis, Joan Horn, Steve Conn and Council Clerk Benning — brought valuable expertise to the process. And villagers who attended the public forums asked good questions, giving the finalists a deeper understanding of the village.

So welcome to Yellow Springs, Mr. Cundiff. And thanks to Council, Village staff and Yellow Springs citizens for a job well done.
