Tuesday, Aug. 26, Yellow Springs evinced a 2–0 victory over Tri-County
North, but lost to Sidney Lehman 7–0 on Saturday, Aug. 30, to put
the team at 3–1 for the season.
Against Tri-County, Yellow Springs’ Ryder Comstock scored both the
team’s goals, the first on an assist by Katie Nickels. Lady Bulldog
keeper Ashanta Robinson had five saves to keep her team ahead.
Boys soccer faces climb
On Thursday, Aug. 28, the boys lost to Springfield Catholic Central 2–1,
with the Bulldogs goal scored by Kevin Sikes-Gilbert. At that point in
the season, Yellow Springs was 2–2–1.
Golf team wins one
Last week on the golf course YSHS beat conference rival Xenia Christian,
but fell short against a host of other teams in a meet.
On Saturday, Aug. 27, the Bulldogs, who finished with 189 at the Locust
Hills course, had an off day and were upset by the Greene- view Rams who
had a final score of 188. In Yellow Springs’ first flight Carl Wiener went
over the Rams’ Justin Northup’s 39, while Bulldog Lucas Donnell sailed
through with a 43 to beat his counterpart. Eric Rudolf shot a 52, and
Max Fleishman shot 47, two under his fourth flight opponent.
At Sebastian Hills on Tuesday, Sept. 2, the Bulldogs came in third in
a quad meet with 195 points. Max Fleishman shot the team’s low score
of 45, followed by Lucas Donnell with 46, Joe Fugate with 51 and Zane
Reichert with 53.
The YSHS golf team is 5–10 for the season.
Football team loses to Rams
The YSHS football team saw some action against the Greeneview Rams on
Friday, Aug. 29, but eventually fell 36–12 to the Jamestown team.
The win was good for the Greene Memorial Hospital rivalry trophy, sponsored
by the sports medicine program that serves Yellow Springs schools through
its ATC, George Sandlin.
The Bulldogs got under hoof in the first quarter when the Rams intercepted
a Bulldog pass for an early touchdown. Raphael Allen received the kick
off from the Rams for a 28-yard gain before being tackled at the 40 yard
line.
The Rams scored again in the second quarter, but Allen blocked the extra
point. Earnest Johnson received the kick off from the Rams and ran for
a 24-yard gain before lightning forced an hour delay. Back on the field,
the Rams forced a Bulldog fumble, which was quickly recovered by Jake
Auten for a 10-yard run. Quarterback Ryan Newsome then threw to Raphael
Allen a 45-yard touchdown pass. The Bulldog extra point was blocked, and
the Rams took the kick off for an 85-yard touch down and an insurmountable
23–6 lead.
The Rams completed two additional touchdowns in the second half, and an
injured Newsome was replaced by Raphael Allen and Joe Fugate sharing quarterback
duties. The Bulldogs managed another touchdown in the fourth quarter,
but the extra point failed, as did any efforts for a last-minute comeback.
For the offense, Ryan Newsome had 20 yard rushing and 70 yards passing;
Raphael Allen had 101 yards rushing, 16 yards passing and 70 yards receiving;
Ernest Johnson had six yards rushing; Ian Wimberly had eight yards receiving;
and Matthew Rowe had 14 yards receiving.

two sacks; and Levi Amsted and Allen Cox both had four assisted.
Volleyball nets league win
On Monday, Aug. 25, the Yellow Springs High School volleyball team defeated
Miami Valley High School for its first league win. Showing no signs of
first-game jitters, the team came away with a 3–1 victory with scores
of 25–22, 28–26, 17–25, 25–18. The victory was
a total team effort with several substitutions in the last game and everyone,
including a few junior varsity players, contributing. Brittany Sheets
recorded 14 kills and three blocks; Maiya Thornton and Marlee Layh recorded
two aces each; Belle-Pillar Fleming had 33 digs, followed closely by Stephanie
Scott with 31 digs.
