Boys two-mile relay goes to State
At the regional preliminary meet on Tuesday, May 27, the YSHS boys 4x800 relay squad qualified for State with a second place finish in 8:11.6. The girls 4x200 relay team qualified for regional finals, to be held on Saturday, May 31, as did sophomore Alexis Onfroy in the 1600-meter finals and junior Jacob GunderKline in the 3200-meter finals.

The first four places in every final advance to the regional championships, and the top eight places in every event score points. With four districts in each region, which encompasses all of the schools in southwestern Ohio, there will be 16 athletes (or relay teams) in each event at Saturday’s regional finals, which takes place on Saturday, May 31, at Welcome Stadium, beginning at 2 p.m.

At last week’s division III District meet, held on Tuesday and Saturday, May 20 and 24, the YSHS boys team finished sixth and the girl’s team took ninth out of 19 schools.

The boys 4x800 won, while the 4x400 took second place. Alexis Onfroy was third in the 1600-meter run, and Anthony Pettiford finished fourth in the 400-meter dash. Jacob GunderKline was fourth in the 3200-meter run, and Andy Peters was fifth in the 1600-meter run and Onfroy was fifth in the 800-meter event.

Brock GunderKline was seventh in the 3200-meter run, and Ryan Newsome was eighth in the high jump. The boys 4x100 relay squad was seventh, and the 4x200 squad was eighth.

For the girls at the District meet, the top performance was the 4x200 relay, which took second place. Kristen Foster also took second in the 400-meter dash. Brenda Jones was fourth in the 100-meter dash, while Melodie Wright was sixth in the 200-meter dash. Elizabeth Gonder was sixth in the 800-meter run. Gina Laurens, Jones, Foster, and Leslie Holland advanced to the District finals in the 4x400 relay.

Doubles team wins 1 at District
After winning the division II Troy Sectional tournament last week, YSHS doubles team Olivia Chen and Alex Turner advanced to the District tournament on Thursday, May 22, at Centerville High School. The Yellow Springs team beat Franklin 6–1,6–0 in the first round, and then lost 6–0,6–1 to Seven Hills from Cincinnati, who went on to finish third in the District tourney.

T-ball season opens June 6
By Jimmy Chesire
Perry League, Yellow Springs’ fascinating and phenomenal T-ball program, opens its 2008 season Friday night, June 6, 6:30 p.m. at Gaunt Park.

We’re the village’s non-competitive beginners’ baseball program for girls and boys ages 2-9. Two- and three-year-olds are welcome if accompanied on the diamond by an adult. There are no fees, no sign-ups, no registrations, nor any requirement to play every week. Come when you can, when you will. We will play on ten consecutive Friday nights, June 6 through August 8. You can begin on any of those nights, up to and including the final potluck trophy night, August 8.

Do you have one of those remarkable creatures in your life, one of those vibrant, vivacious, vigorous, and volatile beings – also known as a toddler, pre-schooler, kindergartner, or kid in his or her most remarkable middle childhood? Can that child frequently be found flinging himself violently about; or is she known to roar around in raptures adults can barely begin to fathom; or do they resemble, as often as not, a rocket fired off on the 4th of July, veritably exploding with an over abundance of something – zeal? passion? early dementia? We may have just the antidote you need: an exuberant, joyous and, some say, mildly demented T-ball program.

We try to keep it simple, and are serious about keeping it non-competitive. There are no outs in T-ball, no runs, no scores. And no one ever strikes out in the Perry League: you get a thousand strikes in t-ball. We do every thing we can to make it fun for everyone, male or female, boy or girl, man or woman, gay or straight, Republican or Democrat, Anarchist or Green, black, brown, red, green, white or yellow.

Every child gets a chance to field and a chance to bat a couple of times each Friday. The first 100 or so kids showing up will get a free cap and a chance to buy the stupendously beautiful 2008 version of the always glorious Perry League t-shirt.

We’re a Yellow Springs Recreation Board program. United Way funds, which come through the good work of Yellow Springs Community Council, get us started every summer. Then the sale of t-shirts, donations from generous parents, loving grandparents, awesome aunts, ugly uncles, and the many marvelous, exceptional, stupendous, and unparalleled friends of the program – like the Yellow Springs Lions’ Club which has paid for the children’s trophies these past eight years – and gifts from the children themselves, allow us to pay back the Rec Board and pay for the program ourselves.

We welcome all the community’s children regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, ability or disability. And we work at being tender, patient, kind, and loving to them all.

Registration for Sea Dogs team
Registration and orientation for the Yellow Springs Sea Dogs will be Monday, June 2, 6-7:30 p.m. at the YSHS cafeteria. Fees are $75 for individual swimmers and $100 for families. Scholarship assistance is available.

Team suits will be available from the team’s supplier during the time of registration or can be ordered online. Team suits are not required for participation.

Practices begin June 9 at the Gaunt Park pool at 9 a.m. for swimmers 11 years-old and up and 10 a.m. for 10 year-olds and under. Younger swimmers need to be able to swim the width of the pool to participate. Meets begin June 17 and continue until League Championships on July 26.

The program's success depends on parent volunteers. Parent help is especially needed for judging, announcing, and coordinating. Training for officials to judge at meets will be held Saturday, June 14, at a nearby pool. These positions are especially important and we have many vacancies to fill for the upcoming season.

For further information and to volunteer, call coach Dave Wishart at 767-1415 or Aida Merhemic at 767-9280.
