OBITUARIES
Michael Cowen
Michael Lee “Mikey” Cowen of Fairborn,
formerly of Yellow Springs, died at 6:20 a.m., Saturday, May 17, in Kettering
Medical Center. He was 30. He was born August 11, 1977, in Cincinnati,
a son of Albert H. Cowen and Karen Woodmansee-Cowen.
He was a 1995 graduate of Yellow Springs High School, and he was one quarter
shy of graduating from the National College of Business and Technology
in Kettering. He also attended Sinclair Community College and Wilberforce
University. As a writer, Mikey won an Editor’s Choice award presented
by Poetry.com and the International Library of Poetry. He had a published
book of poems, On The Inside Looking Out, which was included in the International
Who’s Who of Poetry, and he also had poems printed in two other
publications: Twilight Missing and Expressions.
Mikey was a member of Urbana Swedenborgian Church and also attended Mack
Memorial Church of the Brethren in Dayton.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Benjamin and Lucille
Cowen; maternal grandfather, Major D.A. Woodmansee; and god-sister, Alicia
Titus.
He is survived by his parents of Yellow Springs; a sister, Naomi R. Cowen
of Xenia; two brothers, Christopher A. Cowen of Richmond, Ind., and Johnny
R. Cowen of Yellow Springs; sister-in-law, Crystal Cowen; two nieces,
Destini M. Cowen and Alisha Nicole Cowen; a nephew, DeAndre Justin Cowen;
maternal grandparents, Rosella and Robert Baugus of Columbus; and several
aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family will receive friends 5–8 p.m., Friday, May 23, in the
Walter-Schoedinger Funeral Home, 642 South Main Street, Urbana, where
services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 24, with Rev. Renee Machiniak
officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mikey’s memory to the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation, Greater Dayton Chapter, 1293-H Lyons Road,
Dayton, Ohio 45458; the American Humane Society, 63 Inverness Drive East,

Rick Caslin
Rick Caslin, loving son of Teresa and the late
George Caslin, died Sunday, May 18. He was 59. Rick fought a valiant battle
against acute promyelocytic leukemia.
Rick and Donna want to thank all of their friends and family for the love,
prayers and encouragement during this difficult battle. (Rick knew that
you were all there for him.)
Rick is survived by his beloved wife, Donna; stepchildren and their partners,
Lisa and Kevin Fullerton, and Mike and Gwyn Rotramel; grandchildren Jake,
Alexandra and Reece Fullerton; big brother and sister-in-law, Bill and
Connie Caslin; nephews, Andrew Caslin and Eric Caslin and his wife, Tracy,
and a very special person, Dr. Joe Lavelle, who fought hard for Rick’s
life.
An informal remembrance gathering, as Rick requested, will be held later
this summer for family and friends. A tree will be planted in Rick’s
honor along the bike path in Yellow Springs. Contributions may be made
to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or to the James Cancer Center at
the Ohio State University.
Celebration in memory of the life of Ellie Dale
Ellie Dale’s family will hold a celebration of her life at the Friends
Care Center on Saturday, May 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. Any who wish to join
in are welcome. Anyone with a story to tell about Ellie is welcome to
share it.
Please do not send flowers. A fitting tribute to Ellie would be a contribution
to the Friends Care Center.
