last week First up was Emmanuel Christian with a 7–3 record. The Yellow Springs squad fell behind 3–0 and had two outs and no one on in the fifth when the bats came alive. Joe Fugate singled, Jamie Kitzmiller walked, Tyler Fox singled, Todd Sheets drove in 2 with a hit, then 2 more scored on a hit by Andrew Ferguson to put the Bulldogs up 4–3. The fireworks continued the next inning against three Lion pitchers as the Dogs scored 6 times on hits by Kevin Sikes-Gilbert, Ethan Brown, Fugate, Kitzmiller, and Fox. Meanwhile Sheets set down the last 12 Emmanuel batters in a row with the help of flawless fielding by Cory Daniels at third base. On Thursday, Dayton’s pitcher Eric Biggs gave up hits to Sheets and Ferguson to give the ’Dogs a run in the first and then clamped the lid on the home team’s offense for the rest of the game. Meanwhile the Warriors’ offense collected nine hits and eight walks to plate 10 runs for the win. For the game, Biggs gave up only 3 hits and struck out 13 in the best performance Yellow Springs has seen in a couple of years. The home game against Troy Christian on Saturday, May 3, at 11 a.m. is the first wood-bat game in several years. It has been 30 years since aluminum bats replaced wood in the high school leagues. Tennis team wins three more On Wednesday, April 23, Yellow Springs gave Greeneview the once-over and swept through the singles competition, suffering only one loss at first doubles to win the day 4–1. Olivia Chen earned a double bagel win at first singles, while Alex Turner and Hardman had to work to lose games on their respective courts. Francesco Amighetti and Carl Wiener won their second doubles match 6–4,6–3. But the hardy first doubles team of Amy Dibenedetto and Julika Ruf showed their mettle against a tough northeastern team on Thursday, April 24, and beat out their opponents in three sets at 4–6,6–4,7–5 to lead off another 4–1 win for the Bulldogs. Chen and Hardman again had resounding success, while Amighetti and Wiener won 6–3,6–3 on the second doubles court. Turner lost control of the second singles court and went under in three sets. And against Southeastern on Friday, April 25, Yellow Springs gave up just two games on all five courts before shutting down the visiting Trojans. Track team’s best showing For the boys, the distance runners set four new meet records. The 800-relay team of Jacob GunderKline, Brock GunderKline, Alexis Onfroy, and Andy Peters finished in a record 8:26, while its members went on to score firsts in individual events. Onfroy finished first in the 1600 meters in 4:35, while Peters took the 800 in a record 2:06.2 and Jake GunderKline took the two miles in a record 10:25. A slightly altered team of Anthony Pettiford, Onfroy, Brock GunderKline and Peters also took first in the 400 relay in 3:40.1. Onfroy garnered a second-place finish in the 800, and Pettiford took second in the 400. Third places went to Ryan Newsome in the high jump with 5’10 and Peters in the mile run. Ernest Johnson took fifth in the discus throw, while Ron Cobb had two fifth-place finishes in the 200-meter dash and as the lead-off in the 800 relay along with Raphael Allen, Newsome and Robert Harden. Austin Bailey anchored a sixth place finish for the 400-relay team of Cobb, Allen and Newsome, while Josh Meadows finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles. The Lady Bulldog relay teams brought home three first-place finishes from the Southeastern invite, including the fearsome foursome Elizabeth Gonder, Brenda Jones, Kristen Foster and Leslie Holland who took the 800 1:57.1 and the 1600 in 4:35.5. Melodie Wright ran the third leg of a combination led by Jones and Foster and anchored by Holland, who together took the 400 by storm in 56.2. Jones also scored a second-place finish in the 100 meters, while Foster took second in the 400. Gonder came home with third in the 800, while Wright got fourth place in both the 200 and the discus. Softball aims high Against Cedarville, Alex Beer had two hits, and Aiysha Walker had two base hits. Against Emmanuel Christian the Lady ’Dogs were up by 2 going into the seventh inning, when the Lions scored 3 runs to inch ahead. “And that’s all she wrote,” Coach Jake Fulton said, adding that Bailey Linse pitched an outstanding game, and Sarah Morrison and Kristin Foster had a strong day in the outfield. Alumni ball game set The Yellow Springs High School baseball team will host its annual alumni game on Monday, May 12, at 6 p.m. at Gaunt Park. Register for Minor League baseball Registration for the 2008 Yellow Springs Minor League Youth Baseball Program will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Gaunt Park. Boys and girls ages 7 to 11 are eligible to participate as long as they won’t turn 12 before July 31. Minor League is a coach-pitch league, and no experience is necessary. Fees are $25 per child, and $15 for each additional player for families with more than one player. Each player must have a registration form signed by a parent or guardian. Registration forms can also be picked up and dropped off at 236 North High St. The season will begin at the start of summer break and will run through mid July. Teams usually play two games per week, which are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, as well as Saturday mornings at the minor league field on the far east side of Gaunt Park. Additional coaches may be needed this year due to the expected number of players. Sea Dogs to hold stroke clinic in May The Sea Dogs will sponsor a competitive swimming stroke clinic from 6–7 p.m., on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning Monday, May 5, with the last session on Wednesday, June 4. The clinic will be staffed by Sea Dogs coaches, parents, and volunteers. Flyers about the clinic are available at Mills Lawn School and the Antioch School. Children of all ages are welcome, but they should be comfortable in deep water and able to swim short distances. A $50 fee for the 10 sessions is requested and scholarships are available upon request. The Sea Dogs plan to begin outdoor practices at Gaunt Park on Monday, June 9. Questions may be directed to Dave Wishart, 767-1415. Soccer Inc. camps to start in June Yellow Springs Soccer Inc. (YSSI) will host summer soccer camps during the week of June 16–20 for kids in Yellow Springs and surrounding areas. This will be the third year for these locally held soccer camps. Last year’s camp had over 50 participants and was a great success. Half-day camps (9 a.m.–noon) are offered for ages 6–9, 10–13 and 14–18. Registration has begun and if completed by May 2, the participants receive a free British soccer jersey and a ball. The cost of the week long camp is $99. The camp focuses on teaching key techniques and the technical components of soccer. These British soccer camps aim to coach skills within a framework of character development based on respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship. Camps are lead by talented coaches from Britain who have a genuine interest in providing each player a memorable, positive experience while having fun and improving soccer skills. A free clinic will also be offered to soccer coaches. The date and time of this coaches clinic will be announced closer to the onset of the camp.
