Vote Issue 10 for schools

If It’s hard to overestimate the value to Yellow Springs of good schools. Good schools help our children grow into responsible, creative and questioning adults who at best learn to love learning. Good schools attract young families to our community. Good schools bring new businesses. Good schools give our village a heart and a soul.

We are fortunate in Yellow Springs to have good schools. But they need our attention. On March 4 the Yellow Springs school district has on the ballot Issue 10, a renewal permanent improvement levy. Permanent improvement levies fund capital projects that are not funded by the school’s general fund.

Specifically, the schools need upgrades in computers, new busses, a new HVAC system for the McKinney School, preventive maintenance for the Mills Lawn roof, a modern telephone system and replacement of the asphalt at Mills Lawn parking lot.

We are also fortunate in Yellow Springs to have an exceptional school district treasurer, an engaged new superintendent, excellent administrators and teachers, and a strong school board. We can trust these folks when they say they need something.

For our kids, our schools and for our town, vote for Issue 10.

Neuhardt deserves our support

While the News usually does not make endorsements in primary elections, we’ll make an exception. That’s because Sharen Neuhardt is running for Congress.
She faces strong competition in the Democratic primary for the 7th District seat.

Neuhardt and her husband, Dave, took a huge risk for our town in 1999 when they went out on a financial limb to purchase Whitehall farm. Mainly due to their efforts, the 900-acre farm is now protected by conservation easements so that the town’s northern edge will stay forever green. Their bold action speaks of their commitment to green space and to their community, qualities we’d like to see more of in Washington. Neuhardt, an attorney, emphasizes the need to provide affordable health care for all Americans, create jobs, reduce dependence on foreign oil and end the war in Iraq.

These are all critical needs. Neuhardt deserves our vote.
