Bulldogs host swim meet
The Yellow Springs High School boys and girls swimming teams
hosted the fifth annual Yellow Springs Invitational meet at Wittenberg
University on Friday, Jan. 25. Ten schools in addition to Yellow Springs
competed. In the overall scoring, the Yellow Springs girls were in a three-way
tie for third out of 11 teams and the boys were ninth out of 11 teams.
The overall girls’ winner was Bellefontaine, which also took the
boys’ meet.
The meet is scored as a regular invitational meet,
but it is also scored as a Metro Buckeye Conference meet. In addition
to Yellow Springs, three other MBC teams competed, including Dayton Christian,
Troy Christian, and Xenia Christian. Scored as an MBC meet, Yellow Springs
finished tied for third with Xenia Christian in the girls’ competition
and in third place ahead of Troy Christian in the boys’ competition.
Dayton Christian won the MBC girls competition and Troy Christian took
first place in the boys’ competition.
In relay competition for the girls, Miriam Barcus (backstroke),
Danielle Doubt (breaststroke), Claire Triplett (butterfly), and Aprile
Doubt (breaststroke) placed fifth out of nine teams in the 200-yard medley
relay. Barcus, Triplett, Danielle Doubt, and Marlee Layh combined in the
400-yard freestyle relay to place fourth. In the boys relay competition,
Zane Reichert, Jake Kintner, John Michael Malone, and Francesco Amighetti
swam to sixth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay and fifth place in
the 400-yard freestyle relay.
In individual competition for the girls, Danielle Doubt
placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Triplett dropped three seconds off her best time in the 100-yard free-style
to place 16th then swam to seventh place in the 100-yard backstroke. Layh
placed 16th in the 50 freestyle and 17th in the 100 freestyle. Aprile
Doubt continued to improve her performance in the 50-yard freestyle with
a 28th-place finish among 48 swimmers.
In the boys individual competition, Amighetti placed
seventh in the 200-yard freestyle and twelfth in the 100-yard free-style
with a season-best time. Reichert placed 16th in the 100-yard freestyle
and seventh in the 100-yard backstroke. Malone was 16th in the 50-yard
freestyle and 16th in the 100-yard freestyle. Kintner placed 17th in the
50-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The next meet for the Yellow Springs swimmers is the
Irish Invitational, hosted by Springfield Central Catholic this Friday,
Feb. 1 at the Springfield YMCA at 300 S. Limestone St. Warm-ups are at
5 p.m. and the meet starts at 6:30.
Girls ball drops home game
Short handed due to injuries and sickness, the Lady Bulldogs
came up on the short end of a 75–48 score against Tri-County North
at home on Thursday, Jan. 24. Ashanta Robinson led the home team with
31 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals.
According to Coach Duncan Thomas, the first half pretty
much determined the outcome of the game, with Tri-County leading 45–18.
Robinson scored 12 of the team’s 18 first half points.
The second half was a draw, with the teams scoring
30 points each. Alex Beer scored 8 points for the game and Melodie Wright
had 4 points and 7 rebounds. The next contest is on the road against Spring
Valley on Saturday, Jan. 26. The girls have only two more regular season
games before starting tournament play on Feb. 14 at Brookville High School.
Tournament tickets are available at the high school at $5 apiece.
Tickets on sale for basketball tourney
Tournament time is coming up for the Yellow Springs
High School girls and boys basketball teams. The girls pulled a first
round bye and will play their first game against the winner of Tri-Village/National
Trail on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m. at Brookville. The boys play Mississinawa
Valley on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 3:30 p.m. in Vandalia.
Tickets for tournament games held at home cost $5 presale
and $7 at the door. Tickets will be available at the double header on
Feb. 1 and will also be on sale at the school from Feb. 10–15 during
regular school hours.
