Bulldog Sports Roundup
Girls in a split
Coach Duncan Thomas took advantage of a lopsided score to get
his bench some playing time as the Lady Bulldogs defeated Xenia Christian
45–23 at home on Monday, Jan. 14. Ryder Comstock had 11 points and
12 rebounds, Ashantá Robinson had 17 points and 13 rebounds and
Melodie Wright had 6 points and 7 rebounds. Previously, the team had lost
two straight conference games at home.
“We still need to improve on some areas,
but it is coming around,” Coach Duncan Thomas said after the game.
The girls didn’t fare as well on the road against
Jefferson on Thursday. Robinson’s 22 points led the Bulldogs, but
it was not enough as they lost 57–32. Jefferson controlled the game
throughout with high-percentage shooting from the field and sealed the
Lady Bulldogs fate by making seven of 10 free throws.
Next up is a home game on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 7:30
p.m. against Tri-County North. The J.V. game starts at 6.
Swimmers in prelims
The Yellow Springs High School swimmers competed in the County
Invitational Swim Meet at Wittenberg University last weekend. The preliminary
events took place on Friday, Jan. 18 and the finals were held on Sunday.
Five Bulldog relay teams and several individuals qualified for the finals.
However, none of the relays and only three individuals were able to come
back on Sunday due to scheduling conflicts, Coach Dave Wishart said.
On Friday, the 200-yard medley relay including Claire
Triplett (backstroke), Danielle Doubt (breaststroke), Barbara Jewell (butterfly),
and Aprile Doubt (freestyle) finished 11th, qualifying for the consolation
heat of the finals. Marlee Layh, Aprile Doubt, Triplett, and Miriam Barcus
placed 11th in the 200-yard freestyle relay, also qualifying for the consolation
finals. Danielle Doubt, Jewell, Layh, and Barcus placed fifth in the 400-freestyle
relay to qualify for the championship finals. For the boys relays, Zane
Reichert, John Michael Malone, Jake Kintner, and Francesco Amighetti placed
7th in the 200-yard freestyle relay to qualify for the consolation finals
and the same foursome finished fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay to
qualify for the championship finals.
In individual competition on Friday, Danielle Doubt
qualified for the championship finals, finishing fifth in the 50-yard
freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke. Barcus qualified for finals,
finishing seventh in the 200-yard freestyle. Jewell Layh placed seventh
in the 200-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke. According
to Wishart, Layh had strong swims in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events,
and Triplett, battling a virus, swam surprisingly well in the 100-yard
freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. Aprile Doubt swam her best times
of the season in the 50 freestyle and the 50 breaststroke, Wishart said.
For the boys on Friday, Amighetti qualified for the
200-yard freestyle championship finals with a third-place finish and the
consolation heat of the finals in the 100-yard freestyle with a ninth-place
finish. Reichert swam to 15th place in the 100-yard freestyle. John Michael
Malone had strong swims in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events and likewise
for Jake Kintner in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, where he
finished 12th to qualify for the consolation finals.
Barcus, Danielle Doubt, and Amighetti returned to swim
in the finals on Sunday. Barcus placed eighth in the 200 freestyle and
6th in the 500 freestyle. Doubt finished 6th in the 50 freestyle and 5th
in the 100 breaststroke. Amighetti was 5th in the 200 freestyle and 11th
in the 100 freestyle. With just a handful of swimmers, Yellow Springs
finished 10th out of 14 teams in the girls scoring and 11th out of 14
teams in the boys events.
The team’s next meet is the Yellow Springs Invitational
at Wittenberg University on Friday, Jan. 25, with warm-ups beginning at
6:45 p.m. and the competition starting at 8 p.m.
