Boys beat conference foe
Down 16 points at halftime against
a Middletown Christian team that was undefeated in the Metro Buckeye Conference,
the Yellow Springs Bulldogs pulled out a show-stopping comeback to win
64–57 on the road Friday, Jan. 4. A second blowout at 66–38
against Cedarville on Saturday put the ’Dogs up 6–5 overall
and 3–3 in the conference.
Against Middletown on Friday, the Bulldogs started
slow and ended up on the bottom end of a lopsided 34–18 score at
the end of the second quarter. But deep down Yellow Springs knew it could
do better. The Bulldogs returned to outscore the Eagles 16 to 11 to take
the lead by a hair at 34–33. Then in an all-out reversal of fortune,
Yellow Springs, with a tough pressure defense, forced 12 turnovers and
outscored Middletown 30 to 14 for the win.
Kilan Brown put up 11 of the fourth- quarter gains,
while Raphael Allen had 8 and Jeremiah Peacock had 9. For the night, Allen
had his first double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, joining Peacock’s
ranks with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Brown had 17 points and five steals.
Kevin Sikes-Gilbert and Ryan Newsome each put up 9 points. And the Bulldogs
were 82 percent from freethrow line.
Friday’s win earned Yellow Springs a tie with
Dayton Christian for second place in the conference. Middletown, Troy
Christian and Jefferson are tied for first.
Against Cedarville, Yellow Springs again got off to
a sluggish start, falling under 12–5 in the first quarter. But they
didn’t stay down long, scoring 24 points in the second period and
21 in the third to go up 57–30 by the end of the third quarter.
Leading scorers were Brown with 14 points and Peacock
with 11. Joe Fugate posted his first double digit score with 10 points
and six rebounds. Andy Peters put up 6 points, Jake Diebold had 5 and
Andrew Ferguson also gave the team some good minutes. Newsome and Sikes-Gilbert
each put up 6 points in first half, while Ian Wimberly and Allen had 4
points each in the first half.
Girls basketball beats Cedarville
Ashantá Robinson’s game high of 25 points
matched the Cedarville team total as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Indians
36–25 at home on Saturday, Jan. 5. Cedarville made a run at the
end of the first half, but the Yellow Springs defense responded by holding
the Indians to one point in the third quarter. Robinson scored 10 of the
team’s 12 fourth-quarter points to put the game out of reach. According
to Coach Duncan Thomas, the girls worked hard for this victory, showing
great team defense. Freshman point guard Stephanie Scott suffered a fracture
to her left hand during the game and will be out for four weeks.
McKinney games rescheduled
The McKinney boys and girls basketball teams will make
up the games against Troy Christian that were cancelled in December. The
girls play at the Troy High School gym on Thursday, Jan. 24, beginning
at 5:30 p.m. The boys play at the Troy elementary school gym on Monday,
Jan. 14, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Recreational youth basketball signup
Registration for recreational youth basketball will
be held Saturday, Jan. 19, 11 a.m.–noon, at the Bryan Community
Center gym. All third through sixth grade girls and boys are welcome to
play. The league’s focus is on learning basic basketball skills
and sportsmanship.
Since the purpose of the registration is to assess
players’ skills and assign them to teams, children should come prepared
to play. Coaches will then contact players’ families to let them
know the time of their first meeting. League play will begin Saturday,
Jan. 26, and continue through mid-March. Children will play 90 minutes
each Saturday, beginning at 9 or 10:30 a.m. High school players are encouraged
to help as assistant coaches and may earn community service learning credit.
If unable to attend registration, for more information, or to help coach,
call Lynn Hardman at 767-8433.
