Girls basketball in blowout
New coach, new team, first game of the season, missing two starters…a recipe for disaster? Not at all. The Yellow Springs High School girls basketball team started its season at home Friday night, Nov. 16, against South High School of Columbus with a bang, winning the game 75–3.

“Since this was our first game together, I was a little nervous,” Coach Duncan Thomas said this week. “But the girls quickly put my worst fears to rest.”

The two missing starters were Ashanta’ Robinson, who, according to Thomas, had a fever of over 100 degrees, and Melody Wright, who injured her knee in practice the day before the game.

The rest of the team more than made up for the absence of the two starters, Thomas said. Stephanie Scott scored 23 points, followed by 19 points from Jessica Kellar. The defense allowed only one field goal, led by Ryder Comstock who put up 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

“It was a good game,” Thomas said. “But we still have some work to do. This is a long season — one game does not make a season.”

YS harriers qualify for junior nationals

The Miami Valley Track Club won last weekend’s Region V cross country meet, aided by Yellow Springs High School senior Andy Peters, who finished ninth. He and others who qualified for the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics on Dec. 8 in Lawrence, Kan., will now seek All-American status in cross country by finishing in the top 25 of their respective races.

At the junior high level, the Miami Valley girl’s team also won with help from Yellow Springs runners Paloma Wiggins, who finished third, and Lois Miller, who finished sixth. The Miami Valley junior high boys also won their meet, including an 11th place finish from local residents Nick -Thompson and Zach McHugh, who finished 12th.

Vince Peters coordinates the Miami Valley Track Club.
