Founders Day for Antioch

In an effort to celebrate Antioch College’s distinctive history as an innovative liberal arts college, the college will celebrate Founders Day on Friday, Oct. 5. Founders Day commemorates the inauguration on Oct. 5, 1853, of Horace Mann as the first president of Antioch College.

The entire community is invited to participate in the celebration. From noon–1 p.m., Jim Malarkey will give a speech titled “The Dazzling Vision and Relentless Passion of the Founders.” From 1 to 3 p.m., a silk screening workshop (bring own t-shirt) will be held in the Pennell House. Line-up will take place at the steps of the Antioch College Student Union building for the parade at 4 p.m. The parade will start at 4:15 and continue to cross Livermore Street, march down Xenia Avenue, turn onto Corry Street and return to the union steps.

A community dinner, a carnival of fun, games, and energetic speeches by some favorite look-alike founders will take place from 5 to 7 p.m., outside of the student union. Cabaret Horace in the theater will offer a performance and open mic at 8 p.m. The Antioch Independent Media Arts Collective will showcase student films, historical speeches, and Antiochian videos throughout the day in Kelly Hall.

The organizers of this Founders Day celebration believe that in such turbulent times, Antioch’s rich history can be drawn upon to help provide direction for the future. All are welcome.

Parade preparation, sign making
Final parade preparation, including sign-making, will take place at the next meeting of the Yellow Springs Ad-Hoc Group to Keep Antioch College Open. The entire community is invited to the meeting, which will be held on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., at the Coretta Scott King Center on the Antioch College campus.
