OBITUARIES
Birgitta Valey
Birgitta Mara Valey died at Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia on Sept.
19. She was 46.
Birgitta was born in Dayton, on Sept. 3, 1961, to Valentin Alexander
and Grace Adeline (Dillahunt) Valey. She was a 1980 graduate of Yellow
Springs High School and also a 1988 graduate of Wright State University,
where she earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts.
Birgitta was a 37-year resident of Yellow Springs, and was known for
her free spirit and for being well immersed in the Yellow Springs community.
Birgitta enjoyed time with her family and friends and the pursuit of
her long- time interests in art, photography, horseback riding, computers,
sewing and caring for her pets. She also was an advocate for the rights
of those with disabilities.
Birgitta was preceded in death by her father, mother and brother, Steven
Craig Valey.
She is survived by three brothers, Curtis and Annette of Springfield,
Ohio, Kenneth of Galesburg, Ill., and Wayne of Superior, Colo.; three
sisters, Carolyn of Burr Ridge, Ill., Mara Lyn of Santa Cruz, Calif.,
and Ingrid of Moorestown, N.J.; an aunt, Mara Santamaria of New York
City; five nieces and nephews, Anthony, Tonya, Daniel, Nicholas and
Elliott; nine cousins, Karen, Mark, Brian, Julie, Tyler, Margaret, Dennis,
Mary Lou, and Dolly Dillahunt; close friends Isabelle Newman, Anna Arbor,
Charlat Brent, Noel, Alice McKinney and Laura Van Lehn; and numerous
other family members and friends.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the First Presbyterian
Church in Yellow Springs. Birgitta will be buried at Glen Haven Cemetery
in New Carlisle. Donations in Birgitta’s memory may be made to
the Yellow Springs Train Station, which the Valey family saved from
destruction in 1967 in memory of their son Steven (checks can be made
to Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce), or to the First Presbyterian
Church.
Margaret Rhoades
Margaret S. Rhoades, formerly of West Milton and
New Carlisle, died on Sept.. 9, at the Friends Care Center, Yellow Springs.
She was 90.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Floyd Rhoades; daughters
and sons-in-law, Connie and Harry Niles, Fairborn, Ohio, Vickie and
Jesse Haines, Albuquerque, N.M., Bettie and Phil Penry, Springfield;
seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sept. 12 at Hale-Sarver Funeral Home,
West Milton, with burial to follow at Potsdam Cemetery.
Ada Mae Adkins
Ada Mae Adkins died on Sept. 20, at the Friends Care
Community, Yellow Springs, Ohio. She was 95.
She was born on Oct. 7, 1911, in Elliott County, Ky., the daughter of
Jerry and Arminta “Minnie” (Smith) Wilson.
Ada was co-owner and co-operator of Adkins Market, Fairbon, for over
35 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of over 50 years,
Mitch Adkins; daughter, Joyce; three brothers, James, Luther and Cecil
Wilson; and three sisters, Molly Adkins, Vesta (Wilson) Via, and Vada
(Wilson) Mayse; and daughter-in-law, Rhodella (Snider) Adkins.
She is survived by her sons, Cort Adkins of Fairborn, Ohio, Dallas Adkins
of Dayton, Ohio, and Ven Adkins of Yellow Springs; sister, Ida Williams
of Elyria, Ohio; daughters-in-law Ellen (Kubay) Adkins of Yellow Springs,
and RoseCare Compy (Fannin) Adkins of Dayton, Ohio; grandchildren Tim
Adkins, Donovan Adkins, Chris Adkins and Amber Adkins, and Jane Adkins
of Delaware. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends Care Community.
William Mowen
William Leonard Mowen Jr. of Dayton died Friday, Sept.
14, at his residence. He was 85.
He was born Oct. 21, 1921 in Xenia, Ohio, the son of William L. Sr. and
Mary Louise (Johnson) Mowen.
William proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He retired from Chrysler Airtemp where he worked as a welder, and was
very involved with antique cars.
He is survived by his wife, Reta Irene (Koogler) Mowen, whom he married
Sept. 2, 1950; children and their spouses, Rebecca Jane and Bernard Kraus,
Deborah A. and Robert K. Hamilton, all of Dayton, William L. III and Ramona
Mowen, of Yellow Springs and Mary Kathryn and Rick Smith of Clayton, a
sister Gladys Louise “Pauline” Staup of Fairborn; six grandchildren,
Jennifer, Joseph, AJ, Taylor William, Zachary and Jacob.
Services were held Sept. 19, at McColaugh Funeral Home, Xenia. Interment
followed in Woodland Cemetery, Xenia.
Jane Morgan memorial planned for October
A memorial service for Jane Morgan will be held at
the Glen Helen Building, 405 Corry Street, Yellow Springs on Sunday,
Oct. 7, at 7 p.m.
Morgan died at her home in the Vale community, just
south of Yellow Springs, among family and friends on Wednesday, Aug.
15, eight weeks after her 89th birthday.
