Bulldog sports roundup
Boys soccer wins two
Last week the YSHS boys soccer team added two more victories
to its season record, downing the West Liberty Salem Tigers 4–0
on Tuesday, Sept. 4, and blanking the Dayton Christian Warriors 3–0
on Saturday, Sept. 8.
Against West Liberty, Yellow Springs got the first
goal when Kevin Sikes-Gilbert netted Alexis Onfroy’s corner kick.
Zac Katz-Stein increased the Bulldog lead to 2–0 just before the
break when he spun and shot in a loose ball served into the Tiger goalmouth
by Andrew Ferguson’s corner kick. Sikes-Gilbert scored 1 early in
the second half when he found himself on the business-end of Ben Armstrong’s
corner kick. James Butler closed out the scoring for the night, assisted
by Ferguson. Alex Turner recorded his third shutout of the season in goal.
Dayton Christian came to Yellow Springs after posting
a huge 1–0 win over Ohio’s number two division III school,
Springfield Catholic Central. That win vaulted Dayton Christian to fifth
place in the state’s most recent top-ten poll. Unfazed by the hype,
Yellow Springs took control of the game early on, with Butler and Onfroy
making dummy runs over a penalty kick ball booted in by Armstrong. The
Bulldogs picked up an insurance goal in the second half on a Butler cross
tapped in by Sikes-Gilbert. Three minutes later Butler’s 20-yard
blast into the goal put the game out of reach for Dayton. Turner recorded
another shutout goal for Yellow Springs, aided by the gritty defensive
play of Todd Sheets, Ethan Brown, Jake GunderKline, Brock GunderKline,
Max Buchwalder, Kyle Buchwalder and Ferguson.
Football falls to rival Indians
Under the weight of a 34-year losing stretch to Cedarville,
the Bulldogs were crushed once more by the Indians on a stormy Friday,
Sept. 7. But first the Bulldogs showed they can dominate, if only for
a while.
Antonio Woodard received the opening kickoff, and in
the first half, Adrian Lester threw a 40-yard pass to Raphael Allen for
a touch down. The extra point was good, and the Bulldogs thought they
might make history. With 25 seconds left in the first half, Cedarville
attempted a last minute pass, but Kilan Brown blocked it.
In the second half, the Bulldog defense stopped Cedarville
on the goal line and took over the ball, but they were stopped in the
end zone for a safety. Cedarville collected the 2 points and then got
possession at the Bulldogs’ 45-yard line, after which they pounded
the ball down the field for a score. They ran the ball for two more points
and a 10–7 lead. Cedarville scored again after a bad snap from
the Bulldogs that went over Lester’s head.
Golfers win one, lose one, tie one
The YSHS golf team swung left, right, and center last week with
a loss against Cedarville on Wednesday, Sept. 5, a win against Xenia Christian
the next day, and a tie with Dayton Christian on Monday, Sept. 10.
At home at Locust Hills last week, Yellow Springs shot
a combined score of 235, versus Cedarville’s low of 191. Eric Rudolf
took fourth place with a score of 50, and Lucas Donnell and Joe Fugate
each shot 51.
At Sebastian Hills Country Club on Thursday, Yellow
Springs had the low score of 172 to beat Xenia with 221. Max Fleishman
shot the high score of 40, followed by Carl Wiener with 42, and Fugate
and Rudolf with 45.
The Bulldogs came home again to tie Dayton Christian
at 186, but Dayton Christian took home the win with the fifth player’s
score of 50 just beating Yellow Springs’ fifth player’s 53.
Wiener was the game high scorer with 41.
Volleyball wins two
The YSHS volleyball team won both of its games last week. Against
Miami Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 4, the Lady Bulldogs won all three games,
25–12, 25–23, 25–20. It was a similar story against
Jefferson on Thursday, Sept. 6, with Yellow Springs taking all three games,
25–16, 25–4, 25–8. Baily Linse was the high scorer at
both games.
YSHS Homecoming weekend planned
