OBITUARIES

Lawrence C. Gerthoffer Sr.

Lawrence C. Gerthoffer Sr. died Friday, Sept. 7. He was born Dec. 8, 1926, on the Gerthoffer farm in the Penn Hills area of Pittsburgh, to the late Charles and Bertha Gerthoffer.

Larry retired from the Pennsylvania Board of Parole with 27 years service. He served in the Navy in World War II and later joined the Navy reserves. Larry jumped ship to join the Army reserves where he earned his paratrooper wings as a Green Beret and retired with 30 years military service as a major in the Army reserves. He attended St. Vincent prep school and college and is a member of the Football Hall of Fame. Over the years he enjoyed his fishing and hunting trips, camping at Treasure Lake, yearly vacations to the Outer Banks and traveling across the country, working in his vegetable gardens and watching the birds from the home he built in Latrobe.

Larry was a member of St. Rose Roman Catholic Church where he attended regularly as an usher. He volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul Society in Latrobe. Larry was a member of the Kingston Veterans & Sportsmen Club, Derry Rod & Gun Club and American Legion Post 515.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, David, and sister, Charlotte.

He is survived by Jeanne, his wife of 58 years; sons, Larry Jr., Yellow Springs, and Bill and his wife, Betsy, Mobile Ala.; Chuck and his wife, Cindy, of Derry; Jeff and his wife, Jackie, of Mt. Pleasant; John and his wife, Lori, of Greensburg; daughters Jan and her husband, Mike Carmo; Rose and her husband, Dave Trunzo of McMurray, and Barb Bollman of Latrobe; grandchildren Lydia and Evan Gerthoffer, Justin, Mike and Drew Gerthoffer, Genny and Willy King, Mandy and Mike Carmo, Ali Trunzo, Matthew, Megan and Dan Kunkel, Kayla, Nick, MaryLee and Kay Sue Gerthoffer and Alex Gerthoffer; and great grandchildren, Emily and Danielle King.
