Bulldog sports roundup

Footballers take down Rams
At home on Friday night, Aug. 31, the Bulldog football team had its first taste of success in beating the Greeneview Rams 6–0.

Antonio Woodard took the kick off return for an eight-yard run. Yellow Springs had a interception on the first play of the game, however, Bulldog Raphael Allen quickly took the Greeneview runner down.

The Rams managed to get the ball down the field several times in the first half, but they were crushed each time they got within the 20-yard line. In the second half, Woodard blocked a fourth down punt by the Rams, giving the Bulldogs the ball. The Bulldogs rapidly converted that turnover into a touch down, with a pass by quarterback Adrian Lester to Woodard. The extra point was blocked by Greeneview.

With 38 seconds left in the game, Allen intercepted a Greeneview pass and returned the ball to the Bulldogs. As the ’Dogs set out to run the clock down, Greene-view became agitated, and officials called the game at 6–0 with 34 seconds to go.

Alexis Onfroy is shown driving for the goal to put the Bulldogs up 3–2 on Saturday night against Sidney Lehman.

Boys soccer improves to 4–1–1
Thursday, Aug. 30, the YSHS boys soccer team, ranked second in the Dayton area for small schools, traveled to Springfield to challenge the number-one ranked small school, Springfield Catholic Central. The Bulldogs trailed 1–0 just 10 minutes into the contest when a fullback for the Irish drilled a 20-yard shot off a corner kick into the goal. Springfield doubled its lead early in the second half on a penalty kick. Even after several significant lineup changes, the Bulldogs could not generate an effective offense, and gave up a third goal late in the game to fall 3–0.

Yellow Springs jumped on the scoreboard early in Saturday’s home game against Sidney Lehman Catholic on Sept. 1. Two minutes into the game Andrew Ferguson served up a cross from the left side that Brock GunderKline headed over the goalkeeper for a goal. The Bulldogs fell to a 2–1 deficit at the half before newfound intensity and a change of positions for many of the ’Dogs resulted in a complete reversal of fortune. Kevin Sikes-Gilbert evened the score on a goal assisted by Zeke Hardman. Then James Butler dished off a pass into the penalty box as Alexis Onfroy streaked past Sidney’s defense and unleashed a left-footed rocket into the right side netting. The pair teamed up again for what would be Butler’s game-winning goal, which helped to boost the team’s season record to 4–1–1.

Sarah Morrison booted the ball out of her goal to hold off as long as possible the ensuing onslaught from Sidney Lehman on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Tough week for girls soccer
Down two defensive starters, the YSHS girls soccer team put up a good fight in losing to Sidney Lehman 5–0 on Saturday, Sept. 1. The Lady Bulldogs started out strong, holding back the Lehman Lady Cavaliers until late in the first half. But as fatigue set in and passes went wild, it was up to keeper Sarah Morisson to stem the onslaught with 20 saves on the night.

Harriers meet with success
With seven runners returning from last year’s three-time Metro Buckeye Championship team, and 10 strong freshmen, the YSHS boys cross country team lead its season off finishing fourth out of 18 schools at the Bob Schul Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 25. Yellow Springs came in sixth out of 29 schools at the Hillsboro invite on Saturday, Sept. 1.

At Bob Schul, the Bulldogs beat their MBC competition, but placed behind first and second place schools, Minster and Russia. Lone senior Andy Peters led the team with a third place finish in 17:07 for the 5 kilometer distance. Jacob GunderKline broke the 18 minute barrier for the first time to place 13th out of 215 runners. Brock GunderKline followed in 25th place, while Anthony Pettiford came in 48th, one place ahead of Birch Robinson-Hubbuch and well ahead of co-captain Eric Bean.

Allison Berry led a girls team composed entirely of freshmen and finished the 5K in 21:59 for 23rd place out of 172 girls. Hannah Kumbusky, Elizabeth Gonder and Kelly Miller also completed strong races.

On Sept. 1 for the boys, Peters won the hilly Hillsboro race in 16:14. Jacob and Brock GunderKline, Pettiford and Nerak Patterson each ran personal best times.

In the girls race Berry improved upon the previous week’s time to set a personal best of 21:39 for 56th place out of 297 runners.

Golf team takes first, second
On Aug. 22, at a tri-meet at Locust Hills, the YSHS golf team finished second with a combined score of 188, behind Southeastern with 180 and Cedarville with 190. In individual scores, Carl Wiener with 43 was the high scorer, followed by Max Fleishman who shot 44.

The following day the Bulldogs shot a combined score of 211 at the Madden Golf Course, where they were trounced by Troy Christian, who had 182 and Middletown Christian and Dayton Christian, who both had 187. Wiener, with 51, was again the Bulldogs’ high scorer, followed by John Malone with 51.

Four of the six Bulldogs lowered their scores at the home course Locust Hills to beat Cedarville on Aug. 29. Wiener shot the low score of 38, and Fleishman and Lucas Donnell shot a 45 and 46, respectively. Combined with John Malone and Eric Rudolf each with 51 and Zane Reichert’s 53, Yellow Springs slid past the Indians’ 185 with a 180.

Volleyball team loses four
At the tri-match on Aug. 25, the YSHS volleyball team lost all three matches against Greenon, and lost 2–1 to Cedarville. Against Fairborn on Aug. 27, Yellow Springs lost 2–1. And against Belmont the team won two games and lost three.
