3 TD not enough to win
The Yellow Springs High School football team lost its first
football game of the season 34–19 on Thursday, Aug. 23, against
Cincinnati Christian.
Adrian Lester, quarterback, threw for 190 yards during
the game with three receivers completing the Bulldogs’ three touch
downs. Tony Parker, Jeremiah Stubblefield and Quinthony were the receivers
responsible for the touch downs.
Raphael Allen, defensive linebacker, made an outstanding
16 tackles during the game.
Girls soccer wins 1, loses 2
With a lineup featuring six first-year varsity players, the
YSHS girls soccer team lost its first game of the season 5–0 to
an experienced Greeneview team on Tuesday, Aug. 21. The following Thursday,
Aug. 23, Yellow Springs lost 3–1 to Urbana. But by Saturday, the
Lady Bulldogs had had enough, and they beat Middletown Christian 3–1.
Against Middletown, Ryder Comstock scored the first
goal unassisted to put the Lady Bulldogs up by one in the first half.
Yellow Springs maintained its momentum in the second half with goals by
Olivia Chen assisted by Anne Weigand, and another one from Comstock assisted
by Chen.
Bulldog goalkeeper Sarah Morrison had nine
saves.
According to Yellow Springs Coach MacKenzie Reynolds, the Bulldog
defense, lead by Ellen Swisher and Rachel Trumbull, held its ground on
several strong offensive attacks from Middletown. The offense was assisted
greatly by midfielders Megan Kaplon and Danielle Doubt. “I think
that we started out against a couple of very good teams, but we are now
starting to find our stride,” she said. “I am looking forward
to a strong season from this team.”
Boys soccer opens 3–1–0
The YSHS boys soccer team began their fall season last week
with wins against Greene-view, Urbana and Greenon, and a tie against Cincinnati
powerhouse Summit Country Day.
Yellow Springs began on the road at Greeneview on Tuesday,
Aug. 21, and claimed a decisive 4–1 victory with two goals by Ben
Armstrong and one each from James Butler and Jake GunderKline. Assists
were provided by Armstrong, Butler and Jake GunderKline.
Last Thursday night, Aug. 23, the Urbana Hillclimbers
fell to the Bulldogs, 9–0. Finding a place in the scoring column
for Yellow Springs were Butler with 4, Brock GunderKline with 2 and Todd
Sheets, Armstrong and Zeke Hardman with 1 each. Butler and Sheets each
had two assists, while Armstrong and Kyle Buchwalder each had one. Alex
Turner recorded the shutout in goal for the Bulldogs.
On Saturday, Aug. 25, Cincinnati Summit Country Day
wasted no time stunning the Yellow Springs defense with a quick score
in the first 30 seconds. The ’Dogs battled back with a 20 yard free-kick
from Armstrong just before the halftime break. Playing a more inspired
second half, the Bulldogs maintained offensive pressure, but could not
score. The game ended in a 1–1 tie.
On Monday, Aug. 27, the Bulldogs downed the Greenon
Knights 3–0. Lighting up the scoreboard for Yellow Springs were
Brock GunderKline, assisted by Sheets; Jake GunderKline, assisted by Brock
GunderKline; and Hardman, assisted by Jake GunderKline.
Recreational soccer teams now
forming
Teams are now being formed for the Yellow Springs Recreational
Soccer League’s fall season. Anyone who missed registration last
week and wants to be placed on a team should call one of the following
league directors: Bronze Cup (7-, 8- and 9-year olds): Bob Curley, 767-7070;
Silver Cup (10- and 11-year olds) and Gold Cup (12-, 13- and 14-year olds):
Bill Hardman, 767-8433.
Volunteers sought for youth baseball
league
The Yellow Springs Youth Baseball program is looking for volunteers
to coach and help organize the Major League (10- to 14-year-old division)
for the 2008 season. If interested, call Chris Lloyd at 767-9318 at your
earliest convenience.
YSHS games rescheduled
The Yellow Springs High School boys soccer game scheduled for Thursday,
Aug. 30, at 7 p.m., is an away game at Springfield Catholic Central.
The boys JV team has added a home game on Thursday,
Sept. 20, at 7 p.m., against Xenia Nazarene.
