Seadogs make solo gains at championships

By Ali Thomas

Thirty-two swimmers from the Yellow Springs Aquatic Club swam in the Miami Valley Association League Championships on July 28 at the Wittenberg natatorium. Due to the small turn-out (YSAC boasts 106 summer swimmers), the Seadogs came in last in a seven-team competition. Still, there was much to celebrate. The Seadogs led the league in both girls 6 years and under and boys 7 and 8 years old, due to strong swimming by Emma Reed, Maleah Gillman-Baggett, Fisher Lewis, Jeff Crawford, Tristan Giardullo, Nathan Gillman-Baggett, Hayden Orme and Youssef Reed. These efforts, combined with the other 10 and under swimmers, carried the category to third place.

The older 11–18 year-old swimmers had high points as well. Elizabeth Malone placed first of the league in all her events, beating her seed time in the 100-individual medley and the 50-butterfly each by over 3 1/2 seconds. As well as many of those listed below, Zarine Giardullo, Rachel Meyer, Emma Holman-Smith, Rachel Biggs, Chloe Ramsay and Amy Brown swam their fastest times of the season during the championships.

Bulldogs win scrimmage against Belmont Bisons

The Bulldogs played their first scrimmage game Saturday, and scored a 12 to 6 win over the Belmont Bisons. Both touchdowns were made with interceptions by the Bulldogs defensive team.

Scrimmage games are held to help coaches and players fine tune their positive skills and to evaluate any needed improvements.

Each team maintains the ball for 10 plays, then reverses to the other team for 10 more plays. This process continues as long as the coaches feel it is necessary.
