At Friday’s Division III regional competition; YSHS Senior Sam Borchers set a new stadium record for the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:14:14. He is shown here with teammate Andy Peters, who pushed him through the first three laps.

Bulldogs break records, race to state

Last week the Division III regional competition was a week for the Yellow Springs High School track and field record books.

On Wednesday, May 23, the 4x800 relay team of Alexis Onfroy-Curley, Andy Peters, Evan Firestone and Sam Borchers finished the race in Piqua way ahead of the field in a crushing 7:51:82. That time sent the YSHS record of 8:08:10 established in 2005 by Jeremy Upton, Evan Gerthoffer, David Warren and Borchers back to the boards and dismantled both the regional record of 8:01:69 set by Versailles in 2001 and Caldwell High School’s 1992 state record of 1:54:83.

Then on Friday, May 25, the Bulldogs were back to break the regional records in all three races they contested, the 800, 1600 and 3200. Only Firestone’s didn’t count as he finished third to the Luttrell twins from Dayton Christian (with the same time as the second-place finisher.)

The Bulldogs tied for fourth with New Bremen High School with 39 points. Forty schools scored points with St. Henry winning the team title with 60 points. Dayton Christian finished second with 52. Arcanum was third with 42.

In Wednesday’s 4x800 relay, Borchers’ anchor performance as he took the baton 40 meters behind Dayton Christian’s anchor John Luttrell showed how much he has improved in the past 11 months. After a personal best starting leg from Onfroy-Curley and a lifetime best leg turned in by Peters, who drafted behind Dayton’s second runner, Firestone received the baton and gunned another personal best leg for his part. Then Borchers mounted his comeback, pounding out his first lap in 53 seconds to narrow the gap in the back stretch and pull away from Luttrell on the last turn to finish his 800-leg in 1:49.3.

On Friday, Borchers and Peters toed the line in the 1600-meter race next to Dayton’s John Luttrell through two laps before Borchers jumped ahead to break the 4:19.99 regional record time from 1983 in 4:14.14. Peters remained in third until the last 300 meters, when he faded to tenth place.

In the 800-meter run several runners attempted to push the pace in the first lap, but a 56-second first quarter was a good fit for Borchers, who finished with a 56-second quarter to win in a new regional record time of 1:52.62. Both times would have been state records for Division III if he hadn’t already set them with slightly faster times over the past couple weeks.

Onfroy-Curley also ran a smart 800 race, holding back on the starting lap and passing several runners on the second to place sixth overall in 1:59.89.

In the 3200-meter run, Firestone was speared by a spike while running with the lead pack, and though it broke his stride for a moment, he held onto the fast pace set by the Luttrell twins, ranked first and second in the state in the event. Firestone continued to charge hard to the finish and placed third overall in 9:33.58, a new personal best by three seconds. This time was also under the old regional record of 9:34. Walt Luttrell grabbed the win and the record with a 9:20.01.

The state meet is this Friday and Saturday at the Jesse Owen Memorial Stadium at Ohio State University just off of highway 315 at Lane Avenue. The Bulldogs will run in the 4x800 meter relay at 4:45pm on Friday, June 1. On Saturday, June 2, the Division III meet starts at 4:15pm. Borchers’ 1600-meter finals will be at 5 p.m., followed about 30 minutes later by his final race in the 800 meters. Firestone completes the day approximately 30 minutes after that with the 3200-meter run.

McKinney writers go to state contest

For the seventh year in a row, McKinney Middle School writers made it to the ranks of the top 10 percent of 7,000 students who competed this year in Power of the Pen. However, this year an unprecedented number of McKinney writers, three from the eighth-grade and two from the seventh-grade, qualified to go to the College of Wooster, site of the Power of the Pen state competition.

State qualifiers included eighth-graders Elizabeth Gonder, Kelly Miller and Louisa Rich, and seventh-graders Zyna Bakari and Lydia Jewett. Miller and Bakari qualified among the top 50 of their grade-levels to compete in the Power Round, the fourth round of writing.

At the competition, seventh-grader Zyna Bakari won honorable mention for her poem, “Memories.” Some current and former members of McKinney’s Power of the Pen team attended to serve as part of the event’s 100 volunteer “runners.”

Also, YSHS ninth-grader Olivia Byrnes served as executive assistant to the Power of the Pen executive director and founder, Lorraine Merrill.

YS Soccer plans summer camps

Registration continues for the Yellow Springs soccer camps to be held the week of June 18–22 for kids in Yellow Springs and surrounding areas. Half-day camps are offered for ages 6–9, 10–13 and 14–18.

The camps focus on teaching key techniques and the technical components of soccer. These British soccer camps aim to coach skills within a framework of character development based on respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship. Camps are lead by talented coaches from Britain who have a genuine interest in providing each player a memorable and positive experience while improving soccer skills.

A free coach’s clinic will also be offered to assist recreational and team soccer coaches. The date and time will be announced closer to the start of the camp.

The cost of the week long camp is $96. Soccer camp participants will be given a free camp shirt and ball. Those interested in participating can sign up on-line at www.challengersports.com or by picking up additional brochures at a number of Yellow Springs locations, including the Yellow Springs Library and the Bryan Center.
