OBITUARIES
Frances G. Reed
Frances Geneva Reed of Russellville, Ky., passed away peacefully at Friends
Care Community on May 1, 2007. She was 93. Since 2001, she had resided
in Yellow Springs to be near family. Born Feb. 6, 1914, in Olmstead, Ky.,
she was the daughter of Harold and Sadie Bagby.
Frances will be remembered in Russellville for her
long career in retail and accounting. She was an avid, talented, and productive
quilter and she continued that hobby into her last days. In Ohio she particularly
enjoyed her visits to the Yellow Springs Senior Center, where she found
many new friends. And she was always in attendance at her grandson’s
performances in theatrical events.
Mrs. Reed was a member of the First Baptist Church
in Russellville, and attended services at the First Presbyterian Church
in Yellow Springs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W.K. Reed;
two sisters, Louise Downing and Eunice Blick; and a brother, Harold Bagby
Jr.
She is survived by her son, Walter; grandson, Glenn
Reed, of Yellow Springs; her remaining sister, Glenna Robertson of Sumter,
S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Young Funeral Home in her
hometown of Russellville, Ky.
Laurence E. Bailey
Laurence E. Bailey of Yellow Springs died on Saturday,
April 28. He was 77.
He was born May 12, 1929, to Floyd E. and Thelma N.
(Spriggs) Bailey in Greene County. Laurence was a farmer all of his life
and a member of the Farmer’s Bureau. He enjoyed his family, working
on old tractors and cars, and gardening and working with flowers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother,
Hollis Bailey.
Laurence is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois
J. (Boots) Bailey; children, Judith L. Middleton of Beavercreek, Kathleen
and Ross Gobble of North Carolina, Steven Bailey of Yellow Springs, and
Nancy Bailey and fiancé, Perry Fitch, of Fairborn; and grandchildren,
Austin, Dylan, Nicolle, and Ashlyn Bailey.
Visitation was held Wednesday May 2, 10 a.m., in the
Jackson Lytle Williams Funeral Home, Yellow Springs, with Pastor Kenneth
Moore officiating. Interment followed in Glen Forest Cemetery.
Miller memorial set
On his 100th birthday, Antioch College and The Antioch
Review will host a memorial service to commemorate the life of distinguished
emeritus professor of literature Nolan Miller. The service will be held
at Antioch College’s Glen Helen Building on Saturday, May 5, at
2 p.m., and will be followed by a reception.
Nolan Miller died at the age of 99, after years of
teaching, writing and editing. He accepted a faculty appointment at Antioch
in the English and literature department as writer in residence in 1946.
Staying past his original one-year agreement, Miller taught many students,
including Rod Serling, Richard Kaplan, and former Poet Laureate Mark Strand.
He worked extensively with The Antioch Review and became its first fiction
editor in 1965.
