Diamond squad over Jefferson
The Yellow Springs High School baseball team defeated Jefferson,
12–2, on Tuesday, April 10, to take its record to 3–2–1
for the season, and 2–0 in the Metro Buckeye Conference. Other games
were postponed because of weather.
Against Jefferson, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 2–0
lead on a couple of walks and an error, but Jefferson tied it up at 2
by the third inning.
Then the Bulldog batters came alive. A double by Todd
Sheets and a single by Jonathan Haller scored a run in the fourth. In
the fifth, Cory Daniel singled, stole two bases, and scored on a ground
ball by Tyler Fox. Lucas Donnell led off the sixth inning with a single,
and Sheets, Haller, Joe Fugate and Daniel added other hits to score 5
runs.
In the seventh, doubles by Ben Armstrong and Kilan
Brown scored 1 run, and Sheets drove in another with a single.
Sheets pitched the complete game for his second straight
win, striking out 12 while giving up only five hits.
A makeup game with Dayton Christian will be played
at home at noon on Saturday, April 21.
Bulldog softballers dominate
The YSHS softball team also got in only one game last week,
dominating Jefferson, 40–0, for the Bulldogs’ first win of
the season.
Lauren Miles pitched five innings, with a three-hit
shutout.
Every Bulldog scored at least once, with most players
scoring several times.
Miles, the leading hitter, had five hits with 6 runs
batted in. Following her closely was freshman Danielle Franklin with four
hits and 4 runs scored.
Altogether, the team had 20 hits and 22 walks.
The softball team will play a makeup game at home against
Dayton Christian at noon on Saturday, April 21.
Boys track third in KTC
The YSHS boys track team placed third out of eight teams in
the annual Kenton Trace Conference meet, Friday, April 13, in Waynesville.
Clinton Massie won the meet with 144 points, with Cedarville
finishing second with 87. Yellow Springs had 79 points, Greeneview 76,
Madison Plains had 57 points and host Waynesville had 38.
Bulldog senior Sam Borchers won his specialties, the
800- and 1600-meter runs, in 2:06.9 and 4:47.1. Capturing the Bulldogs’
other first-place individual finish was Andy Peters, who won the 3200-meter
run in 10:04.9.
Borchers and Peters combined with Brock and Jacob GunderKline
to win the 4x800-meter relay in 8:45.2.
Second-place points were earned by Peters in the 300-meter
hurdles (44.3) and Alexis Onfroy-Curley in the 1600-meter run (4:48.6).
Earning third-place finishes were Brock GunderKline in the 3200-meter
run (10:37.9) and Onfroy-Curley in the 800 (2:09.9). Borchers, Peters,
Onfroy-Curley and Birch Robinson-Hubbuch combined to place third in the
4x400 relay (3:44.7).
In the 100 relay, the squad of Ron Cobb, Asa Casenhiser,
Jerimiha Stubblefield and Jacob GunderKline finished fourth (49.1). Ron
Cobb placed sixth in the 100-meter dash to complete the Bulldogs’
scoring. Chris McElroy had a personal best in the discus.
The Bulldog girls, short several athletes, finished
eighth out of the eight schools competing. The squad’s top finish
was a third-place effort by Kristen Foster in the 200-meter dash (29.4)
with Leslie Holland adding a sixth in 30.3.
The 100 relay squad of Foster, Maxine Midtbo, Maiya
Thornton-Hodge and Holland placed fourth in 56.7. Midtbo, a freshman,
added a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 13'7.5".
Anna Carlson had a pair of seventh-place finishes in
the 1600 run and 800 runs, and Anna Carlson and Meg Franklin also performed
well.
Tennis team wins at Southeastern
The Bulldog tennis team managed to get in one match last week,
taking all six courts in straight sets on Friday, April 13, against host
Southeastern.
In singles, Olivia Chen won 6–0, 6–0, Alex
Turner, 6–3, 6–2 and Eduardo Garafillo, 6–3, 6–3.
In doubles, Raphael Allen and Zeke Hardman won 7–5,
6--2, and Erin Silvert-Noftle and Kyle Buchwalder took their court 6–0,
6–0.
Aiysha Walker and Emile Fleming had a strong 6–2,
6–2 win on the doubles reserve court.
YS Soccer Inc. to host soccer
camps
Yellow Springs Soccer Inc. will host summer soccer camps during
the week of June 18–22 for kids in Yellow Springs and surrounding
areas. Half-day camps are offered for ages 6–9, 10–13 and
14–18. Registration has begun and if completed by Friday, May 4,
the participants will receive a free shirt and ball. The cost of the week-long
camp is $96. The camp focuses on teaching key techniques and the technical
components of soccer.
A free coaches’ clinic will also be offered.
The date and time will be announced closer to the onset of the camp.
