Bulldog sports roundup
Tennis beats Dayton Christian
The Yellow Springs High School
tennis team played only one match last week, beating Dayton Christian
3–2 on Tuesday, April 3. The team was frozen out of its two other
matches against Greeneview and Southeastern.
The Bulldogs tried a different lineup against Dayton,
bringing Alex Turner up to first singles for a crushing 6–0, 6–2
win, while Emile Fleming slid onto the number two singles court with a
smashing 6–3, 6–1 victory. Max Fleishman covered the third
singles spot but lost in straight sets.
At number one doubles Erin Silvert-Noftle and Alexis
Onfroy won 7–6(7–5), 6–2. While many Yellow Springs
players were off enjoying spring break, the Dayton Christian team consented
to allowing 9-year-old Mills Lawn tennis player Alex Taylor to step in
with Raphael Allen to win the second doubles match in three sets. Dayton
officially took the court by default but the Bulldogs went home with the
day’s win.
Baseball beats Xenia Christian
The Bulldog baseball team beat Xenia Christian 6–3 on
Tuesday, April 3, and the Bulldog junior varsity team lost to Troy Christian
16–7 on Monday, April 9. The varsity win takes Yellow Springs to
2–2–1 in the season and 1–0 in the Metro Buckeye Conference.
Against Xenia, though the game was called in the sixth
inning due to lightning, Todd Sheets was the winning pitcher, giving up
only one earned run and striking out seven. Jonathon Haller had 2 hits,
including a double, and had 2 runs batted in. Andrew Ferguson also had
2 hits.
The JV Bulldogs took an early 4–0 lead against
Troy with the help of three walks, three errors and a hit batter. Yellow
Springs was still up 6–5 in the fifth when the wheels fell off.
Zach Reichert threw well, but Troy still got six hits, while the ’Dogs
made two critical errors that led to their loss. Kilan Brown pitched for
the first time and did well for the first four innings. He also had six
stolen bases. Logan Sage had two hits, and Jamie Kitzmiller launched a
deep double to highlight the offense.
Softball games cancelled
Two of the YSHS softball team’s three scheduled games
last week were postponed due to cold and rainy weather. The Lady Bulldogs
managed to play three innings against Xenia Christian on Tuesday, April
3, before weather closed out the game with Yellow Springs batting in the
bottom of the third and the score tied at 14. The game will continue when
the team travels to Xenia Christian for the second matchup of the season
on April 24.
Rescheduled games
The softball team’s 5 p.m. game at Greenon and the tennis
team’s 4:30 p.m. match at Southeastern were both rescheduled for
April 13. The baseball and softball teams were rescheduled to play at
Troy Christian on May 7 at 5 p.m.
