sports It's here! Bulldog winter sports awards The Yellow Springs High School and McKinney School honored their winter athletes in a sports awards ceremony on March 8. The following team members earned recognition for commitment and improvement in basketball, swimming and cheerleading. For the high school boys basketball team, Kilan Brown was elected to the Metro Buckeye Conference first team and was also recognized for a second-year award. Other second-year awards went to Andrew Ferguson, Evan Firestone and Andy Peters. First-year awards went to Rafael Allen, Asa Casenheiser, Joe Fugate, Eduardo Gallifa, Emilio Garcia, Brock GunderKline, Jacob GunderKline, Ryan Newsome, Kevin Sikes-Gilbert and Ian Wimberly. Junior varsity and first-year awards went to Ron Cobb, Devin Freeman, Quinthony Freeman, Zac Katz-Stein*, Chris McElroy, Alex Nickells, Alexis Onfroy-Curley, Ryan Phillips*, S.J. Scott, Colby Silvert*, Dan Stephenson, Jerimiha Stubblefield and Chris Johnson. For the high school girls basketball team, Carly Bailey* won the MBC coach’s award and the team’s fourth-year award along with Alisha Lucas*. Ashanta Robinson was selected for the MBC first team and was recognized for a second-year award, along with Kristen Foster, who also won the MBC sportsmanship award, Ryder Comstock* and Jessica Kellar. Salome Garcia-Halpin* won the Bulldog award for her team as well as a first-year award with Marlee Layh* and Melodie Wright. For the high school swimming teams, the Bulldog awards went to third-year swimmer Brandon Carver-Halley* and second-year swimmer Claire Triplett*. The other third-year award went to Miriam Barcus*, and the other second-year award went to Liz Zaff. First-year awards went to Barbara Jewell, Jake Kintner*, John Michael Malone* and Zane Reichert. High school cheerleaders won recognition as well. Third-year awards went to Alisha Lucas*, Niquelle Orr and India Scarver*. Second-year awards went to Danielle Fulton, Ashlee Jackson and Britney Pitts. First-year awards went to Leslie Holland* and Caitlin Moran. Junior varsity recognition went to Rachel Biggs, Danielle Franklin, Bailey Linse, Merissa Medley, Maxine Midtbo*, Allie Moran, Jamie Paul, Shakie Porter and Maiya Thornton*. McKinney School seventh and eighth-grade boys and girls basketball teams and the cheerleading squad were honored for their performance this year. For the girls basketball teams, awards went to eighth-grade athletes Stephanie Scott*, who also received the team’s Bulldog award, Alex Beer*, Jenna Boettcher*, Taylor Ennis*, Hannah Kumbusky*, Stephanie Lloyd*, Kelly Miller* and Natasha Perry and seventh-grade athletes Katie Triplett, who also received the Bulldog award, Zyna Bakari*, Roniqua Cobb, Paige Evans*, Kelly Hamilton-Trippett, Hana Katz-Stein* and Robyn Weigand. For the McKinney boys basketball teams, awards went to eighth grade athletes Lonya Clark, Mario Cosey, Elliott Cromer*, Isaac Haller, Robert Harden, Keida Johnson, Davin Massie, Anthony Parker, Nerak Patterson*, Addison Pettiford, Tyler Qualls, Zeb Reichert and Carl Wiener. Also honored were seventh-grade basketball players Ameer Wagner*, who also received the Bulldog award, Drew Amstutz, Cole Edwards*, Jacob Fugate, Wade Huston, Rory Papania*, Austin Pence, Nathaniel Reed, Jacob Roe*, Tyler Sammons, John Shaw, Bryan Smith and Jacob Trumbull*. McKinney cheerleading honors went to Kaya Cross, Kelsey Fox, Morgan Gurney*, Stephanie Marion, Kaitlynn McCann, Mercedes Mesa, Jami Miles*, Natasha Perry, Mary Triplett, Bakari, Cobb and Katz-Stein*. * Indicates scholar athlete. Spring soccer starts The Yellow Springs recreational soccer program will begin its spring season on Saturday, April 7. Players who participated in the fall season will remain on the same teams. Coaches will contact the players for practice prior to the start of the season. New players can sign up by contacting Lynn or Bill Hardman for Gold (sixth through eighth grade) and Silver Cup (fourth and fifth grade) at 767-8433; and Bob Curley for Bronze Cup (first through third grade) at 767-7070. Copper Cup players (4-years-old through kindergarten), new and old, need only show up at the Morgan Building field at 10 a.m., on April 7. League director Jim Hardman can be reached at 767-2200.
