OBITUARIES
Garnet E. Blazer
Garnet E. Blazer, 90, passed away March 16 at
Friends Care Community in Yellow Springs. She was a former resident of
Kettering, Ohio; Dunedin, Fla.; and Cedarville, Ohio.
She was born in Northup, Ohio and graduated from Rio
Grande High School and Rio Grande College. She taught elementary school
in the Bainbridge and Cedarville school districts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David R.
and Etta B. (Morgan) Altizer and her husband of 60 years, John E. Blazer.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, J.
Timothy and Mary Anne Blazer of Yellow Springs; four grandchildren and
their spouses, Elizabeth and Joe Ensing of Grandville, Mich., John Blazer
of Columbus, Ohio, Jennifer and Tim Twilley of Palgrave, Ontario, Canada,
Timothy Blazer of Las Vegas, Nev.; and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, March 21, at
Calvary Cemetery in Rio Grande, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, donations can
be made to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45420.
Lucile Sanderson
Lucile T. Sanderson of Wilmington died on March 18
in Clinton Memorial Hospital. She was 83.
She was born March 1, 1924, in Greene County, the daughter
of the late Howard and Nellie Fudge Taylor. Lucile graduated from Jefferson
High School, Bowersville, in 1942, and the Fredicks Beauty Academy in
Springfield.
Lucile was a retired beauty shop operator, having owned
and operated a shop in Yellow Springs and in Wilmington. She was known
for the weddings she did and her love for making angels.
In 1965 she married W. Neil Sanderson, who preceded
her in death in 2000. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Warren
J. Taylor, D.V.M.; sister, Bonnie Taylor and infant sister, Joan Marie
Taylor.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James
A. and Laura Johnston, Tioga, Texas; grandson, Chad A. Johnston, Tioga,
Texas; sister-in-law, Donna Talmage, Sabina; brother, Donald F. Taylor,
Lancaster; and sister, Anita T. Sanderson, Xenia; and many nieces and
nephews and other family members.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 21, at
the Littleton Funeral Home in Sabina. Contributions may be made to the
homeless shelter, 36 Gallup Street, Wilmington, Ohio 45177.
Robert Baskin
Robert Arthur “Bobby” Baskin died on Monday,
March 12, and was buried in Jerusalem, Israel, where he had been residing.
Bobby, son of former Antioch College Professor Samuel and Florence Baskin,
was a fixture in the 1960s and 70s at the Antioch gym and tennis courts,
where he assisted with gym equipment and cheered on all the athletes.
Bobby moved to Miami, Fla., in the late 1970s and became
involved with the University of Miami campus life. He worked at the UM
library and the athletic department, where he was awarded a championship
ring with the UM football team when they became national champs.
Bob was a world traveler who loved music and never
met anyone he didn’t consider a friend.
He was preceded in death by his father and several
cousins.
He is survived by his mother, Florence; his brother,
David; sister-in-law, Miriam; nephews, Avshalom, and Moishe; niece, Adit,
and cousins Ronni and Wayne.
Esther P. Miller
Esther P. Hattle Miller passed away suddenly Saturday,
March 17, at Friends Care Community in Yellow Springs. She was 91.
Esther was born March 4, 1916, in Chillicothe, Ohio,
to William Henry Hattle and Myrtle Sheets Hattle.
Esther’s long life, shining presence and embracing
personality enriched the lives of all who knew her. She will be greatly
missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Murray E. Miller; and her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Ferguson Hattle.
She is survived by her brother, William L. Hattle,
and nieces and their spouses, Linda and George Patterson of Simpsonville,
S.C., and Lee and David Ferguson of Yellow Springs; nephews and their
spouses, William (Rick) and Sandra Hattle of Columbus, Ohio, Robert Hattle
of Ghost Ranch, N.M., and John and Sally Hattle of Western Springs, Ill.;
many grandnephews and nieces; and two Nigerian nephews, Dr. Benjamin and
Connie Okwumabua and their three children and Dr. Benedict “Ngozi”
and Joyce Okwumabua and their four children.
As a resident of Friends Care, Esther was enriched
in her later life by her association with the children of the preschool
at Friends Care, in particular her “preschool buddy,” Katie.
The family wishes to thank the nurturing staff of Friends
Care Center for the love and care extended to Esther during her residence
there.
A private family service will be held at the convenience
of the family in Chillicothe. Esther requested that in lieu of flowers
financial support be offered to Friends Care Center, Yellow Springs.
Antioch plans memorial service for Joe Cali
Antioch College will host a memorial service in honor
of Joe Cali on Saturday, March 24, at 2 p.m. at Kelly Hall on the Antioch
campus. The service will be followed by a reception in the Herndon Gallery.
Cali, head librarian of the Olive Kettering Library,
died at his home near Yellow Springs on Feb. 13. He had been a librarian
at Antioch for 53 years and spent his last day keeping the library open
during a winter storm that closed the rest of the campus.
