Board moves towards levy At its meeting on Feb. 8, members of the Yellow Springs Board of Education voted unanimously to certify to the Board of Elections its determination to proceed with the renewal of the existing three-year emergency levy in the sum of $1,060,000. The levy is the same levy that has been in effect since 1999, and would not result in an increase in property taxes, according to School District Treasurer Joy Kitzmiller. If the levy passes, it will commence in 2007 and first come due in calendar year 2008. According to Kitzmiller, this is the second step in the levy renewal process. The next step is for the resolution to be taken to the Board of Elections to be placed on the ballot. The levy renewal process began in October when Superintendent Tony Armocida and Kitzmiller reported to the board that, at the current rate of deficit spending, the Yellow Springs schools will reach a negative cash balance by the 2009–2010 fiscal year, despite a current surplus of about $3.5 million and assuming renewal of the levy. They projected the current school year deficit to be $746,000. The surplus, Armocida explained at that time, was a windfall that arose out of a 21 percent increase in property evaluation in 2002 and $1.2 million donated as a part of the reorganization of the Antioch Company in 2004. In other school board business: • Armocida gave a power point presentation for his annual state of the schools report. Mills Lawn School has 321 students; McKinney, 119; and Yellow Springs High School, 246. Sixteen district students attend the Greene County Career Center. The total number of students in the schools is 686. Of that number 562 reside in the district and 124 are from open enrollment. Sixty-six district students attend private schools and 24 are home-schooled. The full Power Point presentation will be posted on the Yellow Springs Schools Web site, http://www.yellow-springs.k12.oh.us. Other business from the Feb. 8 meeting will be covered in next week’s News. Contact: vhervey@ysnews.com
