sports Bulldog sports round up Lady ‘Dogs win one, lose one. Yellow Springs led a balanced scoring attack against Stivers, including Ashanta’ Robinson’s 14 points, followed by Jessica Kellar with 13, Ryder Comstock and -Marlee Layh with 10 each, Carly Bailey with 8, and Alisha Lucas with 4. Against Jefferson, pre-game ceremonies honored senior captains Carly Bailey and Alisha Lucas, but the Bulldogs came out flat and were never able to match the intensity of the visiting team. Robinson again led the ‘Dogs with 20 points, with additional points put up by Bailey, Comstock, Kellar, and Lucas. The Lady Bulldogs play their first game of the Division IV sectional tournament against Cedarville tonight, Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Tippecanoe High School. The Lady Bulldogs urge their fans to “make the trip to Tipp” and cheer on a winning effort. Swimming rounds out season For the girls, who swam on Thursday, the 200 medley relay team of Claire Triplett (backstroke), Barbara Jewell (breaststroke), Liz Zaff (butterfly), and Miriam Barcus (freestyle), placed 18th among 22 teams. In the 200 freestyle relay, the same foursome swam their best time of the season to place 16th and score two points for the Bulldogs. In individual competition, Jewell led the way for the girls with a personal best time in the 200 freestyle, placing one spot away from scoring. Jewell placed 16th in the 100 breaststroke, scoring a point while dropping over two seconds from her previous best time. Miriam Barcus had a strong swim in the 200 freestyle, improving on her best time by a second and placing 19th out of 59 swimmers. Barcus then swam the 500 free, placing 19th among 38 swimmers. Triplett dropped over a second in the 50 freestyle, and then she swam to 36th place out of 69 in the 100 backstroke and dropped two seconds of her personal best time. Zaff had strong swims in the 100 butterfly and in the 100 free. In the boys competition on Friday, Jake Kintner and John Michael Malone both swam the 50 freestyle, Kintner shaving half a second from his previous best, and Malone finishing 59th among 72 swimmers. Malone then placed 49th in the 100 freestyle out of 64 swimmers. Kintner placed 35th out of 52 swimmers with a strong swim. Zane Reichert placed 48th in the 100 freestyle, dropping a second from his previous best time. Though the meets came at the end of a frustrating week of school closings and cancelled practices, coaches Abby Guiler and Jenny Riehle were pleased with performances that included personal records for nearly every swimmer. Boys basketball falls to Broncos Jefferson jumped out ahead 17–10 in the first quarter and held that lead through the third quarter when the Bulldogs cut it to four at 46–42. But the Broncos came back in the final period to outscore Yellow Springs 23–11 to clinch the game. Kilan Brown was the game high scorer with 20 points. Kevin Sikes-Gilbert put up 13 points and Ryan Newsome helped out with 9. Girls and boys basketball teams down Cedarville The sixth-grade girls and fifth-grade boys basketball teams won back-to-back overtime games at Cedarville on Sunday, Feb. 11. The sixth-grade girls, down 11–3 in the first half and 21–17 with 26 seconds remaining, forced overtime with a touchdown-style pass from Adrianne Beer to Maryah Martin for a basket. Two free throws by Lois Miller and one by Martin in overtime sealed the victory. The fifth-grade boys, comprised mostly of fourth graders, secured their victory with an overtime basket by Ahmad Wagner off an assist from Jared Scarfpin. The fifth-grade girls lost to Cedarville on Sunday but showed improvement. With a small team, the sixth-grade boys had a shortened season but formed a solid foundation for next year’s team. The coaches congratulate all the players for their hard work and accomplishments. The teams finish up the regular season this weekend at Yellow Springs High School as they face East Clinton on Saturday, Feb. 17. The fifth-grade boys play at 10 a.m., the fifth-grade girls at 11, and the sixth-grade girls at noon. The teams play Clinton-Massie on Sunday, Feb. 18. The fifth-grade girls play at 2 p.m., the sixth-grade girls at 3, and the fifth-grade boys at 4.
