sports Bulldog Sports Roundup High School Swimming In the prelims, the girls 200 medley relay team, including Claire Triplett, Barbara Jewell, Liz Zaff and Miriam Barcus, placed 10th with a season-best time of 2:32.26. The boys 200 medley relay team, comprised of Zane Reichert, Jake Kintner, Brandon Carver-Halley and John Michael Malone, placed sixth, qualifying for the championship finals on Sunday. In other relay action on Saturday, the same girls placed sixth in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time. And placing eighth was the boys 200 free relay team including Pete Lovering, Reichert, Kintner and Carver-Halley. In individual events on Saturday, Barcus placed fourth, Jewell placed fifth, and Zaff finished 10th in the 200 freestyle. Barcus went on to place fifth in the 500 free, while Jewell swam to sixth place in the 100 breaststroke and Zaff placed eighth in the 100 butterfly. Claire Triplett had a good swim in the 50 free and then placed 12th in the 100 backstroke. For the boys’ individual events, Carver-Halley placed fifth in the 200 freestyle, then finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke. Kintner and Malone saw their first high school competition with strong swims in the 50 free. Malone went on to finish 16th in the 100 free, and Kintner placed 11th in the 100 backstroke. Reichert swam to eighth place in the 100 backstroke after a 13th place finish in the 100 freestyle. In finals competition on Sunday for the girls team, Barcus placed fourth in the 200 freestyle, swimming three seconds faster than the previous day. She then swam to fifth place in the 500 free, wrapping up a successful weekend. Zaff placed 10th in the 200 free, then finished eighth in the 100 butterfly. For the boys in the finals competition, Carver-Halley placed fifth in the 200 free, then took fourth place in the 100 breaststroke, closing out his high school career in good order. Kintner was 10th in the 100 backstroke, dropping a second from the previous day’s time. These four swimmers notched all the points for Yellow Springs. Lady ‘Dogs defeat Miami Valley Robinson’s 20 points paced all scorers, followed by Jessica Kellar with 8, Alisha Lucas with 6, Carly Bailey with 4, and Ryder Comstock with 3 points. The Lady ‘Dogs played especially solid team defense in the second half, holding the Rams to 13 points over the 16 minutes. The Bulldogs are now tied with Miami Valley and Xenia Christian for second place in the Metro Buckeye Conference, with all three teams sharing 5–2 records. Undefeated Troy Christian is in first place. Aquatic Club to sponsor winter swim clinic The Yellow Springs Aquatic Club, which sponsors the Sea Dogs swim team, will sponsor a winter swim clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:15–4:15 p.m., at the Antioch pool, beginning Jan. 23. Any child up to 12 years old who can swim a full length of the pool without assistance is eligible. Enrollment is limited to the first 25 swimmers who preregister. The eight-week clinic costs $60 for one child per family and $50 for the second child of each family. Scholarships are available for those who can demonstrate need. Youth basketball clinic, sign-up set A skills clinic and registration for recreational youth basketball will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Bryan Community Center Gym. All third- through sixth-grade girls and boys are invited. The league’s focus is on learning basic basketball skills and sportsmanship. The purpose of the registration is to assess players’ skills and assign them to teams. Coaches then contact players’ families to let them know the time of their first meeting. League play will begin Saturday, Jan. 27, and continue through March 17. Children will play 90 minutes each Saturday, beginning at 9 or 10:30 a.m. If unable to attend the registration, for more information or to volunteer assistance, call Lynn Hardman at 767-8433. Reduced-price admission tickets Thanks to the generosity of a group of local residents interested in boosting spectators at school sports events, students in Yellow Springs Schools grades 1–12 are eligible to purchase reduced-price presale tickets to basketball games this season. Each presale ticket will cost $1 and may be used for any home basketball game. Students will still pay regular admission prices at the door if they choose not to buy presale tickets. Presale tickets may be purchased individually or in bulk and may only be used by Yellow Springs students. Tickets will be available at 8:45 a.m. and 3:25 p.m. most week days from the athletic director. The program will be in effect for an undetermined length of time. Youth Baseball Major League 2007 schedule Yellow Springs Youth Baseball Major League has announced its summer schedule for 2007. Sign-ups/try-outs will be held May 5 and 12. The draft will be held on Sunday, May 13. Spring training and clinics will start May 14 and the season will begin June 9. The season runs eight weeks with playoffs July 28–29. There will be a trip to Dayton for a Dragons game July 18.
