Bulldog Sports Roundup

Bulldogs beat Middletown
In the wrenching final seconds of the Bulldog basketball game against Middletown Christian on Friday, Jan. 5, Kilan Brown pulled out a classy double foul shot to take back the lead and beat the league rival 64–59.

Yellow Springs started out in command of the game, with Bulldog Kilan Brown knocking in almost everything he threw and Antonio Woodard putting back everything else from underneath the basket. Yellow Springs built a wide 39–24 lead by the end of the first quarter and held it through to the third quarter, when Yellow Springs watched the lead melt away to two at 47–45 by the end of that period.

With two minutes left in the fourth quarter, Middletown finally took over at 55–54. With 19 seconds left and the Bulldogs behind 59–57, Brown got fouled and made both baskets to tie the game before making two more foul shots to seal the Bulldogs’ win. In the final seconds, Kevin Sikes-Gilbert put in another free throw, and Brown tipped one more ball in for good measure just before the clock ran out.

Brown was the game’s high scorer with 32 points, followed by Woodard with 13 and Ryan Newsome with 8.

Lady ‘Dogs get 2 wins
The Yellow Springs High School girls basketball team ran its conference record to 4–2 with wins over Middletown Christian and Jefferson last week. The team also improved its overall record to 4–6.

Against Middletown on Friday, Jan. 5, the Lady Bulldogs played good team defense for most of the game, coming up with a 38–27 victory. Ashanta Robinson led the ‘Dogs with 22 points, followed by Carly Bailey with 6, and Alisha Lucas and Jessica Kellar with 5 each.

Coach Paul Comstock singled out the steady play of Lucas and Bailey, saying “our seniors really stepped up on both ends of the court — Alisha played excellent defense and hit a couple of big shots for us, and Carly’s rebounding was a huge factor in the win.”

On Monday, Jan. 8, the Yellow Springs team defeated Jefferson 49–44, with -Robinson again leading all scorers with 25 points, including 4 three-pointers. Kellar and Bailey followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively, and Ryder Comstock went three for four from the foul line late in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring. Robinson’s scoring average is now 16.3 points per game, placing her among the leaders in the Miami Valley.

Coach Comstock, while still not satisfied with the team’s defensive effort, praised the hustle of Kristen Foster and Marlee Layh. “Those two play good, unselfish team defense every game,” he said.
