Swimmers reach personal bests The Yellow Springs High School girls and boys swimming teams competed at the Springfield North Invitational on Dec. 16. Junior Miriam Barcus led the girls team, scoring one point in the competitive meet. Barcus swam personal bests in both of her freestyle events, placing eighth in the 500 and ninth in the 200. Freshman Barbara Jewell placed 16th among 43 athletes in the 100 breastroke, and she took 12th place in the 200 individual medley. Sophomore Claire Triplett had strong swims in the 50 free and the 100 backstroke, as did sophomore Liz Zaff in the 100 and 200 free. These four girls swam to 13th place in the 200 freestyle relay and finished 18th in the 200 medley relay. Representing the Bulldogs on the boys’ team were senior Brandon Carver-Halley and junior Pete Lovering. Carver-Halley swam his best time in the 100 breastroke to finish 12th, and he placed 18th in the 100 freestyle. Lovering swam to 11th place in the grueling 200 individual medley. Reduced-price admission tickets Thanks to the generosity of a group of local residents interested in boosting spectators at school sports events, students in Yellow Springs Schools grades 1–12 are eligible to purchase reduced-price presale tickets to basketball games this season. Each presale ticket will cost $1 and may be used for any home basketball game. Students will still pay regular admission prices at the door if they choose not to buy presale tickets. Presale tickets may be purchased individually or in bulk and may only be used by Yellow Springs students. Tickets will be available at 8:45 a.m. and 3:25 p.m. most week days from the athletic director. The program will be in effect for an undetermined length of time.
