Bulldogs fall sports awards
The Yellow Springs High School and McKinney School
hosted a sports awards ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 2, to honor the athletes
who participated in fall sports this year.
High school awards
Girls soccer
For the YSHS girls soccer team, sophomore Rachel Trumbull was
named the defensive most valuable player (MVP), sophomore Ryder Comstock
was the offensive MVP, senior Erin Silvert-Noftle took the team MVP, junior
Ellen Swisher received the Bulldog award and junior Danielle Doubt got
the team’s Sportsmanship award.
Comstock and Silvert-Noftle were named to the Metro
Buckeye Conference First Team, while Trumbull and India Scarver were Second
Team All-League selections. Doubt was honored with the Coaches' Award,
which goes to only one player in the conference on the basis of heart
and coachability. Rosa Dixon was honored with a league sportsmanship award.
Silvert-Noftle was named First Team All-District, with
Comstock making the Second Team, while Trumbull and Scarver were Third
Team selections.
Fourth year awards: Silvert-Noftle, Scarver. Third
year awards: Sarah Morrison, Swisher. Second year awards: Olivia Chen,
Comstock, Danielle Fulton, Trumbull. First year awards: Olivia Byrnes,
Dixon, Lara Donnelly, Doubt, Salome Garcia-Halpin, Laura Hyde, Brenda
Jones, Megan Kaplon, Maxine Midtbo, Amelia Shaw, Rebecca Smith and Claire
Triplett.
Boys soccer
YSHS soccer player Brandon Carver-Halley was selected to the
All-State Third Team and the Dayton Division III All-District Team. Selected
to the Dayton Division III North Sectional All-Star Teams were, First
Team, Carver-Halley and Kevin Sikes-Gilbert; Second Team, James Butler
and Ben Armstrong; Third Team, Kyle Buchwalder and Jake GunderKline; Sportsmanship
award, Jake GunderKline. And YSHS boys soccer coach Jim Hardman was selected
as the Dayton Division III North Sectional Coach of the Year.
In Metro Buckeye Conference honors, Carver-Halley,
Sikes-Gilbert and Butler were selected to the MBC First Team, while Kyle
Buchwalder, Armstrong and Jake GunderKline were selected to the MBC Second
Team. Ferguson won the conference Coaches’ award.
From Coach Hardman, Andrew Ferguson won the most improved
player award, Buchwalder was honored as the most valuable defender, Butler
and Armstrong were chosen as the most valuable offense, and Carver-Halley
was selected as the most valuable all-around player. Kumar Jensen and
Sikes-Gilbert won the Bulldog awards for their team.

Armstrong, Butler, Buchwalder and Abeo Miller. Second year awards: Max
Buchwalder, Ferguson, Emile Fleming, Brock GunderKline, Jake GunderKline,
Zeke Hardman, Jensen, Yosef Johnson, Todd Sheets, Sikes-Gilbert and Alex
Turner. First year awards: Ethan Brown, Raphael Bruckner, Asa Casenhiser,
Tyler Fox, Chris Johnson, Eric Rudolf, Taylor Smith and Alexis Onfroy-Curley.
Junior varsity recognition: Ramon Bieri, Robbie Marion, Nathan Mitchell,
Alex Nickels, Ryan Phillips and Drew Stratton.
Football
For the high school football team, Jonathan Haller, Joey Bailey,
Antonio Woodard and Raphael Allen received this year’s Bulldog awards.
Third year awards: Josh Foster, Kumar Jensen and Haller.
Second year awards: Mike Adams, Levi Amstutz, Bailey, Andrew Ferguson,
Joe Fugate, Adrian Lester, S.J. Scott and Woodard. First year awards:
Allen, Jacob Auten, Ben Clonch, Ron Cobb, Wyatt Flatter, Eduardo Gallifa,
Emilio Garcia, Chris McElroy, Ryan Newsome, Jeremy Paul, Eamon Papania,
Matt Rowe and Jerimiha Stubblefield.
Cross country
For the high school boys cross country team, Sam Borchers and
Evan Firestone both took home a slew of awards, including being selected
to the All-Ohio First Team, the All-Region First Team, the All-District
First Team and the All-League First Team. Borchers won the team’s
Bulldog award for most valuable runner, and Firestone was honored with
the Bulldog award for most improved. Andy Peters was selected to the First
Teams for the region and the league, and both Jake and Brock GunderKline
were picked for the All-League Second Team.
Anna Carlson, making up the whole of the girls team
at several meets, was selected to the league’s First Team. And cross
country coach Vince Peters was selected as the MBC coach of the year.
Third year award: Ben Adams. Second year awards: Firestone,
Brock GunderKline and Jake GunderKline. First year recognition: Carlson,
Erik Bean, Anthony Pettiford and Birch Robinson.
Volleyball
High school volleyball team member Alisha Walker, the only fourth
year player, received the Bulldog award for her team. She was also selected
to the MBC Second Team. Ashlee Jackson won a sportsmanship award for the
league.
Third year awards: Jackson, Alisha Lucas and Niquelle
Orr. Second year awards: Bailey Linse. First year awards: Kristen Foster,
Barbara Jewell, Megan Kaplon, Jessica Kellar, Ashanta Robinson, Kristen
Semler and Maiya Thornton. Junior varsity awards: Eileen Borchers, Nancy
Epling, Danielle Franklin, Belle-Pilar Fleming, Marlee Layh, Merissa Medley,
Megan Miller, Alana Moran, Caitlin Moran, Brittany Sheets and Melodie
Wright.
Golf
Alex Visbal came away with the only fourth year award as well
as the Bulldog award for this year’s YSHS golf team. Visbal was
also honored with the MBC’s sportsmanship award. Second year awards:
Max Fleishman, Joe Fugate, Kevin Sikes-Gilbert and Zach Reichert. First
year awards: Ethan Brown, Kevin Mayer and Eric Rudolf. Junior varsity
awards: Jill Bothwell, Josh Creager, Lucas Donnell, Zane Reichert and
Logan Sage.
Cheerleading
Kristen Semler collected the Bulldog award for this year’s
YSHS cheerleading squad
First year honors: Allie Moran, Caitlin Moran, Maiya
Thornton, Merissa Medley, Ashanta Robinson, Kristen Foster, Semler and
Danielle Fulton.
McKinney awards
Football
Honored for their participation on the McKinney School football
team this fall were Austin Bailey, Jacob Fugate, Robert Harden, Keida
Johnson, Rory Papania, Tyler Sammons, David Teyber, Jason Clark, Isaac
Haller, Cole Honeycutt, Devin Massie, Nathaniel Reed, Brian Smith, A.J.
Wagner, Kyle Click, Kelly Hamilton, Jesse Jewell, Zachary McHugh, Matt
Salazar and Nick Sontag.
Haller won this year’s Bulldog award for the
team.
Volleyball
Seventh-grade volleyball team members Zyna Bakari, Lydia Jewett,
Mercedes Mesa, Katie Triplett, Roniqua Cobb, Elizabeth Malone, Jami Miles,
Emma Holman-Smith, Stephanie Marion and Miranda Russell were recognized
for their participation. Eighth-grade volleyball players Alex Beer, April
Doubt, Cydney Linse, Natasha Perry, Lauren Westendorf, Jenna Boettcher,
Taylor Ennis, Rachel Missik, Stephanie Scott, Anne Weigand, Malaika Carver,
Elyse Giardullo, Alex Myers and Elizabeth Tobey were honored for their
performances on this year’s team.
Cobb and Perry were each given a Bulldog award for
outstanding effort and achievement.
Cross country
The McKinney School girls cross country team of Allison Berry,
Hannah Kumbusky, Kelly Miller and Mary Triplett were recognized for their
efforts. The boys cross country team of Gabe Amrhein, Austin Bailey, Michael
Finster, Elias Mulhall, Addison Pettiford, Nick Thompson, Nathan Auten,
Leonid Clark, Josh Meadows, Nerak Patterson, Cole Santell and Adam Zaremsky
were also recognized for participation.
Kumbusky and Patterson were given the team’s
Bulldog awards.
