Murdock set to continue as Antioch University chancellor

Antioch University Chancellor Toni Murdock

The Antioch University Board of Trustees announced at its meeting earlier this month that Toni Murdock has agreed to continue as chancellor of the university until June 2008. Murdock’s commitment to see the university through the goals she set since she began leading Antioch in 2005 reinforced the University Leadership Council’s current effort to unite its six campuses around the country and remind the Yellow Springs community that Antioch is not just a college but a university system, Murdock said during a presentation to the board.

Central to Murdock’s plan over the next several years are two new positions that were created to improve collaboration and academic programming throughout the university. Mary Lou LaPierre has been appointed vice chancellor of advancement to oversee and normalize the public relations, marketing, admissions, fundraising and alumni relations for the seven campuses. Dr. Laurien Alexandre was appointed vice chancellor for university academic affairs to integrate university-wide academic programming and support services.

The university is also planning to hire a new vice chancellor of finance, a director of finance and budget planning and perhaps also a chief information officer, Murdock said.

According to Arthur Zucker, chair of the Antioch University Board of Trustees, the search for a permanent chancellor has been postponed until no later than July 2007. Murdock, formerly president of Antioch University Seattle, became acting chancellor in the fall of 2005, after Jim Craiglow retired. This past summer she was appointed as the chancellor.

“We saw the need to have the continuity of Toni’s involvement to complete the momentum of what she’s begun,” Zucker said last week. “It’s through Toni’s leadership and goal-setting that we’ve been able to put more structure in place so that we can be more effective as a university.”

Murdock voiced a commitment to building a university with administrative and academic connectedness between Antioch College, Antioch University McGregor, Antioch New England, Antioch University Seattle, and the Antioch University Southern California campuses in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.
