Bulldog Sports Roundup
Boys soccer shares MBC crown
The YSHS boys soccer players entered their final regular
season game on Saturday, Oct. 14, against the Dayton Christian Warriors
knowing that they needed a win to guarantee at least a co-championship.
After a scoreless first half with scant scoring opportunities from either
side, Ben Armstrong forced a turnover deep in the Warriors defensive end
just eight minutes into the second half. Armstrong dribbled into the penalty
box with three defenders closing in on him as he let fly a now infamous
shot that slipped past the DC goalkeeper and brought home a share of the
Metro Buckeye Conference title for Yellow Springs.
Yellow Springs plays Greeneview this Thursday, Oct.
19, at 7 p.m., and will then play the winner of the Oakwood/Miami Valley
match at Sidney on Monday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. If the team wins, the
next game will be on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m., with opponents decided
by the outcomes of other games. Call Jim Hardman at 767-2200, or the high
school at 767-7224 for more information.
Golf team sends one to district
Yellow Springs High School golfer Kevin Sikes-Gilbert
scored an 87 in the Division III Sectional tournament at Moss Creek Golf
Club on Sept. 26, which put him in the top four individual golfers to
advance to the District level. He finished 15th out of 72 golfers with
a score of 86 in District play on Oct. 5 at Weatherwax Golf Course.
At sectionals Alex Visbal, Zach Reichert, Max Fleishman,
and Joe Fugate also scored for Yellow Springs and helped the team finish
12th out of 14 teams.
Cross country team MBC champs
The Yellow Springs Bulldog harriers dominated the Metro
Buckeye Conference at John Bryan State Park on Friday, Oct. 13, topping
Dayton Christian 29 to 42. Yellow Springs senior Sam Borchers took his
third straight conference championship title with a winning time of 15:50,
just ahead of Dayton Christian’s John Luttrell, who finished in
15:53.
For the Yellow Springs girls squad, lone runner Anna
Carlson turned in another personal record performance speeding to a third-place
finish in 23:10 and earning First Team All League status.
The depth of the boys team’s seven varsity runners
who finished among the top 15 overall won the boys their title. Behind
Borchers, Evan Firestone finished fourth in 16:24, and Andy Peters took
fifth in 17:33. Jacob GunderKline finished ninth in 18:25, with Brock
GunderKline in 12th place in 18:38, both establishing new personal records
with their times. Andy Sontag ran his fastest time of the year to gain
14th place in 19:01. Final Bulldog runner Ben Adams helped ensure the
Bulldogs’ victory with his 15th place finish and his fastest time
of the year, 19:07.
The victory raised Yellow Springs’ season record
to 132 wins and 29 losses.
The Bulldogs will compete in the Dayton 2 Division
III District cross country championships this Saturday, Oct. 21, at the
Montgomery County Joint Vocational School. Boys events begin at 2 p.m.,
and the girls run at 3 p.m.
Of the McKinney School athletes at the MBC, Hannah
Kumbusky finished second in the girls race, and Nerak Paterson finished
fourth for the boys. The McKinney boys team finished second overall.
Girls soccer wins tourney game
The Lady Bulldog soccer team roared through its last
three season matches last week, beating Xenia Christian again 4–1
on Senior Night, falling to Troy Christian 6–4 and then losing to
Dayton Christian, 1–0. Playing their fourth game in six days, the
Yellow Springs girls beat Xenia Christian 4–1 on Monday, Oct. 16,
to advance to the second round of tournament play against number one seed
Greeneview on Thursday, Oct. 19, at a time to be determined.
Against Xenia on Tuesday, Oct. 10, Ryder Comstock scored
three times with Erin Silvert-Noftle assisting. Silvert-Noftle completed
the win on an assist by Olivia Chen.
Against Troy on Thursday, Oct. 12, keeper Sarah Morrison
was out for much of the match due to an injury, and the Lady ’Dogs
fell behind 5–0 early in the game. Comstock’s second half
hat-trick, along with Chen’s tally off a Silvert-Noftle cross, brought
the team back into the game, but the clock cut short the girls’
chance for a comeback.
On Saturday, Oct. 14, Yellow Springs lost 1–0
to the Dayton Christian Lady Warriors, holders of an impressive 13–1–1
record. Coach MacKenzie Reynolds singled out the hustling play of midfielders
Maxine Midtbo, Laura Hyde, Claire Triplett, and especially Rosa Dixon,
as a big factor in holding down the high-powered Warrior offense.
In the tournament game against Xenia, Silvert-Noftle
and Comstock scored two goals each, and the Lady ’Dogs made the
lead stand up behind a determined defense led by Morrison, along with
Ellen Swisher, Danielle Doubt, Brenda Jones, Rachel Trumbull and India
Scarver.
Comstock’s goals give her eight in the last four
games, all on assists by Silvert-Noftle, and the pair has become one of
the most prolific scoring duos in the Miami Valley.
Football loses at homecoming
In the homecoming football game against the Dayton
Christian Warriors on Friday, Oct. 13, Yellow Springs played well but
couldn’t score until the fourth quarter, and gave up the game 36–14.
Dayton’s running back is the leading rusher in the Dayton area,
and the Bulldogs held him to 160 yards.
Joey Bailey earned the first touchdown for the Bulldogs
on a 78-yard run, and the extra point kick by Andrew Furguson was good.
Antonio Woodard also completed a touchdown off a 13-yard pass from quarterback
Adrian Lester, with another good kick from Woodard.
Lester was 8 for 19 passing in 165 yards, with two
interceptions. Bailey had 19 carries in 160 yards, and Woodard had four
catches in 71 yards. Jeremiah Stubblefield had three catches in 46 yards,
while Raphael Allen had one catch for 48 yards.
