Bulldog Sports RoundUp

Football team defeats Marion
With the score tied and four seconds left on the clock, the Bulldog football team pulled out an exciting 22–20 win against Marion Catholic on Friday, Sept. 29, on a field goal by Andrew Ferguson.

The Bulldogs recovered the opening kickoff after Marion bobbled the ball. Yellow Springs marched down the field and scored on an 11-yard run by Joey Bailey. The extra point by Ferguson was good. The Bulldogs then scored again in the same quarter on a 17-yard pass from Bailey to Raphael Allen. The extra point kick was blocked.

In the second quarter Marion scored three times in a row to go ahead 20–13, followed by a 30-yard pass from quarterback Adrian Lester to Allen for a Yellow Springs touchdown. The score at the half was Marion, 20, Yellow Springs, 19.

Both teams were shut out in the third quarter, but things were looking bleak for the Bulldogs in the fourth. Marion had the ball with three minutes left. They tried to run out the clock but the Bulldog defense caused a fumble with 1:09 left on the clock. Bailey as quarterback took the team down the field and the Bulldog line dug in for Ferguson’s booming 35-yard field goal to end the scoring.

Lester was 7 for 18 passing for 141 yards with two interceptions. Bailey had 24 carries for 152 yards and was 3 for 8 for 77 yards passing. Allen had 7 catches for 165 yards.

Boys soccer tied for first in MBC
With two more wins against Metro Buckeye Conference opponents Miami Valley and Middletown Christian this past week, the Yellow Springs High School boys soccer team improved to 11–1–1 overall, and 3–0–1 in the MBC, tying for first place in the MBC with Ridgeville Christian.

In a nail-biter against the Miami Valley Rams on Thursday, Sept. 28, Yellow Springs outlasted their visitors to take a 2–1 victory. The Bulldogs took the lead with the game’s first goal near the end of the first half, when Ben Armstrong’s free kick from 25 yards out was dropped by the Rams’ goalie, and Kevin Sikes-Gilbert followed it into the goal. Yellow Springs returned the favor with a mishandled free kick to even the score.

Yellow Springs got all the offense it needed 20 seconds into the second half when Armstrong slid into a pass to Brock GunderKline who redirected the ball into the Rams’ goal for the winning margin.

With six different Bulldogs scoring in the first half of the game against the Middletown Eagles, the game was over almost before it began. Scoring for the Bulldogs’ 9–2 win were Armstrong, Zeke Hardman, Brandon Carver-Halley, James Butler, Todd Sheets, Abeo Miller and Gunder-Kline. Butler had two assists, and Andrew Ferguson, Alex Turner and Carver-Halley each had one.

Borchers leads harriers
At the Buck Creek Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30, Sam Borchers toed the line with Miamisburg’s Greg Roeth in front of 171 other runners to win the race in 15:42, a new personal record for Borchers.

Roeth, who had the fastest time coming in, at 15:35, boldly led a large lead pack of six through the first mile of the race, and bunched behind them were the Yellow Springs trifecta, Evan Firestone, Andy Peters and Samuel Borchers.

Entering what is known as the “bowl,” Roeth pushed his advantage on the downhill, leaving only Borchers on his shoulder as the two surged past the two-mile sign. Firestone had mowed down Newkirk and moved into fourth, while Peters was still sixth.

The leading pair remained together until Borchers made his patented move as they climbed out of the basin and Borchers’ strong kick left Roeth nine seconds behind him at the finish.

Firestone broke into the state’s elite with his fourth-place finish in 16:14, a huge 27-second improvement in his personal record. Peters held onto sixth place, finishing in 16:52.

Birch Robinson, Anthony Pettiford and Eric Bean all had personal best times.

As for the lone Lady Bulldog, Anna -Carlson has established a new personal record in every race this season, dropping her time down, from 26:40 at Hillsboro to 24:39 on Saturday for a 96th place finish in a field of 179 runners.

Girls soccer wins one, loses one
The Lady Bulldogs soccer team lost to the Miami Valley School 2–0 on Tuesday, Sept. 26, and beat Middletown Christian 6–1 on Saturday, Sept. 30. Yellow Springs is 5–4–2 in the season.

Against Middletown, Olivia Chen led the way with two goals. Claire Triplett and Brenda Jones also scored. Erin Silvert-Noftle had a goal and an assist, and Ryder Comstock completed the scoring with a goal and three assists.

Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 5:30 is the Lady Bulldogs’ Senior Night and their last home game of the season against Xenia Christian. Co-captains Erin Silvert-Noftle and India Scarver will be honored.

Tough week for volleyball
The Yellow Springs volleyball team lost three matches last week to bring its record to 6–9. Against Cincinnati Christian on Wednesday, Sept. 27, Yellow Springs lost 25–17, 25–23, 25–18, despite many strong volleys by the Lady Bulldogs. Yellow Springs’ high scorers were Ashlee Jackson, Alisha Walker and Niquelle Orr.

Troy Christian won the following day with a score of 25–8, 25–23, 25–17. Miami Valley also beat Yellow Springs 15–25, 25–22, 25–14, 25–11 on Monday, Oct. 2.

FC Springs still undefeated

FC Springs hosted the Enon Knights over the weekend in U-11 boys soccer action, and came away with a 2–2 draw. Enon had a perfect 3–0 record, while the Springs was 1–0–2. A first-half goal by Grant Reigelsperger and a stingy defense anchored by Joey Flores in goal and Jared Scarfpin at sweeper put the local side on top 1–0 at the half. Enon rallied back with two unanswered goals, but with less than two minutes to play, Reigelsperger found the back of the nets again for one last goal.
