Boys soccer shows promise
In the opening week for Yellow Springs High School
boys soccer, the varsity team glided through a scrimmage, an alumni game
and the season’s first game last week with nothing but victory on
the score board.
The Yellow Springs Bulldogs followed a 3–0 scrimmage
win over Springfield Northwestern last week with their first season win,
3–1, over the Oakwood Lumberjacks on Thursday, Aug. 17. The Bulldogs
then beat their elders 7–0 in the annual alumni game on Saturday,
Aug. 19.
The squad is 1–0 to start the season.
Abeo Miller scored in the first half of the scrimmage
against Springfield. James Butler faked the goalie to bury a penalty shot
in the second half, and then closed out the scoring for the game on a
turn around shot just inside the left post.
Against Oakwood, whose team was an early favorite in
the area, the ‘Dogs led 2–1 at the half on goals by Butler
(assisted by Kevin Sikes-Gilbert) and a penalty kick by Andrew Ferguson.
The game’s last goal was made by Ethan Brown, who headed the ball
in off a perfect cross to the goal mouth by Alexis Onfroy-Curley.
On Saturday, the ‘Dogs took on a talented alumni
squad. Miller’s lone goal in the first half put the youngsters on
top of their elders with a thin 1–0 lead.
Showing no respect in the second half, the high school
squad took the alumni to the woodshed and padded their lead with 6 unanswered
goals to end the night with a convincing win.
