Borchers is second fastest high school miler in country

On June 24, YSHS senior Sam Borchers came in second in the 1500-meter race at the USA Junior National Track and Field Championships, held in Indianapolis.

Yellow Springs High School senior Sam Borchers recently ran his way to the second fastest 1500 meter time in the country by a high school runner this year. Competing at the USA Junior National Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis on Saturday, June 24, Borchers smoked the track in 3:46.32 to finish third behind AJ Acosta, the California state champion, and Andrew Bumbalough, a sophomore at Georgetown University.

Donning the Miami Valley Track Club lime green jersey, Borchers was squeezed to the back of the field going into the first turn of the race. Fighting his way back into the top six by sprinting wide, Borchers recovered his rightful place and then took the lead with just 300 meters to go. That lead held until Acosta pulled even with 90 meters to go and then Bumbalough edged past Borchers with only 20 meters left, and all three crashed across the line in a spread of less than four-tenths of a second. Acosta's winning time was 3:45.95, and Bumbalough finished in 3:46.13.

“This was the first time all year that Sam has run in a race where there were runners faster than him,” Borcher’s coach Vince Peters said. “He responded to the challenge.”

The third-p lace finish relegated Borchers to the alternate position for the USA Junior team that will be competing in Beijing at the World Junior Track & Field Championships.

Borchers won both the mile and the 800-meter race in the Division III state championship in May. He finished seventh at the Nike Outdoor National High School Mile Championship in North Carolina on Saturday, June 17.

Also finishing third, and just missing out on the international competition in China, was Borcher's Miami Valley Track Club teammate, Tina Peters, a 2006 YSHS graduate, who finished her 10,000 meter competition in the race walk in third place with a time of 54:22.44. Peters had first place in her sights when she picked up a red card for lifting. Katy Hayes of the University of Des Moines won in 53:22, and Lauren Forgues of Maine was the runner-up.

Peters will be on the USA Junior Team for the USA-Canada Junior Dual Meet in Minneapolis in August.
