Mabel L. Weiss
Mabel L. Weiss, a longtime resident of Yellow
Springs, died from pneumonia and complications on Saturday, May 20. She
was 95.
She was born on Oct. 11, 1910, the daughter of Paul
W. and Louise (Geiger) Weiss. She grew up in Yellow Springs and graduated
from Bryan High School in 1928. After graduation she attended Pratt Institute
in New York City, then returned to Yellow Springs and established a professional
sewing business. Later she changed careers and worked at Antioch College
and at the Yellow Springs Clinic for 30 years.
Mabel was one of the oldest living members of the First
Presbyterian Church. She served on the board of deacons and was a member
of the Women’s Association. She also belonged to the Glen Helen
Association and the Yellow Springs Library Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother,
Kenneth; and her sister, Mary Dykstra.
She is survived by her sister and her husband, Esther
and Russel Miller; Ruth Ricket, her longtime friend and companion; her
nieces, Jane Force and Susan -Bothwell, both of Oregon; four great-nephews
and one great-niece, Jill Bothwell Failla, of Portland, Ore., Rex Force
of Pocatello, Idaho, Andrew Force of Portland, Ore., Clark Force of Tucson,
and Seth -Bothwell of Yellow Springs; four great-great-nieces, including
Jillian, Caitlin and Allison -Bothwell, and five great-great nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 3, at
11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may
be made to the First Presbyterian Church or to the Yellow Springs Library
Association.
Alyce Mae Phillips
Alyce Mae Phillips of Yellow Springs died Saturday
morning, May 20, in Friends Care Community. She was 89.
She was born in Indianapolis, on Nov. 8, 1916, the
daughter of John and Elizabeth Daugherty. She graduated from Crispus Attucks
High School in Indiana. She was married to James O. Phillips for 50 years.
Alyce retired from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base
after a number of years of service. She was a faithful member of Central
Chapel AME Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
She is survived by a sister, Mary Helen Dunn; a nephew
and his wife, William and Carol Dunn; a great-niece and great-nephew,
Lindsay and Brian Dunn, all of Indianapolis; and dear friends Paul L.
and Betty Ford of Yellow Springs.
Per Alyce’s request, there will be no funeral
or visitation. She will be buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
Porter-Qualls Funeral Home in Springfield is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Cuthbertson
Dorothy Groner Cuthbertson died Tuesday, May 19, in
the care of Hospice Savannah. She was 79.
Her supreme gift to her family was her fierce and loyal
love. She will be missed.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond Cuthbertson;
a sister, Beverly Van Name; a daughter, Beverly Groner; and two grandsons,
Elijah Cheney and Asa Casenhiser.
Oliver Clemens
Oliver Edward Clemens of Xenia died Monday, May 15,
at his residence. He was 56.
He was born on March 7, 1950, in Xenia, the son of
Paul and Betty (Scott) Clemens. He was a graduate of Cedar Cliff High
School. He worked at Morris Bean & Company for a number of years and
did odd jobs and hauling.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters,
Barbara Harding and Thelma Clemens.
He is survived by his seven sisters and a brother-in-law:
Betty and Gerald Porter, Rita Clemens, Joyce Dudgeon, Evelyn Clemens,
Phanon Clemens, Lavonne Clemens and Jacqualine Clemens; and three brothers,
Paul Clemens Jr., Kenneth Clemens and Keith Clemens, all of Xenia.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 19, at McColaugh
Funeral Home in Xenia, with interment at Massie Creek Cemetery.
