Bulldog Sports Roundup

Boys track team wins MBC title

Every athlete who competed for the Bulldogs scored to help the team earn 164 points, ahead of Troy Christian (140), Dayton Christian (125) and three other schools.

The YSHS girls team finished third with 64 points, behind Xenia Christian (129) and Dayton Christian (94).

For the boys, first-place finishes in individual events were turned in by Anthony Carter in the long jump (18'6") and Brad Benning-Clark in the high jump (5'6") and the 300 hurdles (43.73).

Several relay teams finished first as well: the 400 relay team (Joey Bailey, Carter, Issa Walker and Benning-Clark), the mile relay team (Benning-Clark, Andy Peters, Walker and Matt Halm) and the two-mile team (Evan Firestone, Peters, Ben Adams and Sam Borchers).

All second-place finishes for the team were netted by individual efforts: Bailey in the 100 meters, Carter in the 200, Halm in the 400, Peters in the 800, Walker in the high jump and Clayton Wolfe in the shot put and the discus.

John Pamplin placed third in both the shot and discus, while Firestone finished third in the mile and the two mile. Peters finished third in the pole vault, and the 800 relay team (Ron Cobb, Bailey, Jerrico Stubblefield and Asa Casenhiser) also finished third.

Ernest Johnson, Jacob Auten and Joe Lawhorn also contributed to the team’s win.

Benning-Clark was named the league MVP, while Stubblefield was named to the all-sportsmanship team.

For the girls, Tina Peters finished first in the 3200 in 14:21, second in the 1600 and third in the 400. Walker won the 100 in 13.3, and Carly Bailey finished second in the 100 while Foster finished third in the 200. The 400 relay team (Peters, Alisha Walker, -Jessica Kellar and Kristen Foster) placed third.

Track tournament begins
The YSHS track teams will compete in the Division III Dayton district this week at Welcome Stadium. The prelims were held Tuesday, May 16. The district finals start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 20.

Tennis wins tourney rounds
YSHS singles player Olivia Chen went into last week’s Division II sectional tournament as the fourth seed. After a first-round bye, Chen blasted through a Southeastern opponent before losing 6–2, 6–0 to Jason Hanley of Kenton Ridge in the third round.

Singles player Alex Turner fought his way through his first three matches, beating Jordan Leep of Shawnee 6–1, 2–6, 6–1 before knocking off Chris Hardman of Bellefontaine and then surviving a grueling third-round match against Quinn Charney of Greenon, 2–6, 7–6, 6–0. The No. 2 seed from Tippecanoe finally stopped Turner in the round of 16.

Third singles player Laura Garcia lost her first match.
Doubles team Pete Lovering and Erin Silvert-Noftle beat Springfield Catholic 6–3, 6–4 in the first round and then lost to the third seed from Shawnee, which eventually won the sectional title. Doubles team Max Buchwalder and Zeke Hardman whipped Southeastern, then lost to top-seeded Urbana.

Baseball team ends long season
On May 9 the YSHS baseball team traveled to Middletown Christian to take on the Eagles, the first-place team in the Metro Buckeye Conference.

The ’Dogs jumped out to a 4–0 lead in the second inning on hits by Joe Fugate, Logan Sage and Todd Sheets. That was the extent of the cheering for the squad, who lost 15–8. All 16 healthy players saw action in the game, which was fitting because the rains then arrived and washed out the remainder of the season.

The team finished 3–16. Clayton Wolfe claimed the home run and batting titles. Pitcher Ethan Brown had the most wins.

Softball games rained out
Both scheduled softball games against Cedarville on May 11 and Dayton Christian on May 15 were rained out.
